Amorsolo, Fernando C.
1949
Oil on Canvas
Amorsolo remained steadfast to two core principles in his art throughout
his career: first, the traditional idealism that says artistic truth is found in balance,
harmony, and beauty; and second, the use of the traditional notion of Filipino
national character that is rooted in rural communities and the cycles of village life.
The artwork named Rice Planters is a perfect illustration of the intermarriage of
these two. Regardless of gender, all of the farmers in the painting are working
together in a rice field on a sunny day. The artwork has a light visual weight due
to the use of natural elements and pastel hues, which is ironic considering the
strenuous work and labor involved in growing rice. He highlighted the figures
against a distinctive glow using his signature backlighting technique, and he
focused intense light on one area of the canvas to draw attention to nearby
features. Amorsolo frequently used sunlight in his works. The artist intended a
tranquil feeling, which was emphasized by the smoothness of the brushstrokes.
