“Pedagogy of the Oppressed” by Paulo Freire

Thesis Statement: Power Relations influence how we see our surroundings and the world around
us.

I. Introduction
A. Paulo Freire conceptualizes critical consciousness and fear of freedom from one of his
classrooms.
B. The first step to restoring humanity is understanding the idea of humanization itself.
C. Dynamics of power exist in society between the oppressors and the oppressed.

II. Summary
A. Superiority and authority create a power to the oppressor over the oppressed that dehumanizes
them.
B. Different strategies are needed to maintain power.
C. The oppressed lack education, making it difficult to participate in society.
D. Education contributes to the oppression.
E. Paulo Freire stated how education should be a vassal for social change.

III. Body I
A. Oppression happens everywhere, every day, and can also happen to each person.
B. The pedagogy assists the oppressed by changing how they view the world.
C. Restoring humanity can balance society and shows enlightenment to the oppressed to fully
understand the concept of being fully human.
D. Politics and Education has a role in achieving freedom.
E. Dialogue distributes the power equally, establishes justice, and provides opportunities to
everyone.

IV. Body II
A. The act of oppression is violent and dangerous to the oppressed.
B. Dehumanization hinders the oppressed to reach their maximum potential and to experience
being fully human.
C. False Generosity is being used by the oppressors to support the uneven power structure that
passively benefits them.
D. The Pedagogy of the Oppressed shows how the oppressors are out of touch with society.
E. The oppressed should challenge themselves to transform society.
V. Conclusion
A. Power relations influence the oppressed people.
B. Paulo Freire teaches us how to live a good and peaceful life.
C. Freedom gives everyone knowledge and opportunity in a progressive community by uniting
everyone in decision-making.
D. The promotion of true humanitarianism and love should be genuine to create productive
relationships.
