Teacher-Centered Methods of Instruction

1. Direct Instruction (Low Tech)
Direct instruction is where teachers use explicit teaching techniques to teach a specific skill
to their students. This type of instruction is teacher-directed, where a teacher typically
stands at the front of a room and presents information.

2. Flipped Classrooms (High Tech)

Teachers present a pre-recorded lectures to students and then assign classwork or
homework. The intent is for students to see the material beforehand, also known as first-
exposure learning, so they can learn the concepts at their own pace. By doing so, students
are better able to focus on participating in class and receive feedback on their efforts during
the lesson — not just after.

3. Kinesthetic Learning (Low Tech)

Kinesthetic learning, also known as tactile learning, is a learning style in which students
learn things by carrying out physical activities, instead of listening to lectures in classes
or otherwise. The word kinesthetic means using one's body to do or create something.

4. Differentiated Instruction (Low Tech)

Teachers know better than anyone that students each have their own unique gifts and
challenges; interests, aptitudes and learning styles. Differentiated instruction is the practice
of developing an understanding of how each student learns best, and then tailoring
instruction to meet students’ individual needs.

5. Inquiry-based Learning (High Tech)

Inquiry-based learning is a learning process that engages students by making real-world
connections through exploration and high-level questioning. It is an approach to learning
that encourages students to engage in problem-solving and experiential learning. There is
so much happening in our world that is worth our learners discovering and experiencing.
The basis of this method is to channelize the thought process of the student through queries
and help them in “how to think" instead of “what to think".
6. Expeditionary Learning (High Tech)
Expeditionary Learning is an approach to education that seeks to engage students in a way
that excites them not only about the subjects they are studying, but also about the process
of education. In the same way that life is about the journey, education is about the process
of learning, and that is what Expeditionary Learning teaches. Students learn by conducting
"learning expeditions" rather than by sitting in a classroom being taught one subject at a
time.

7. Personalized Learning (High Tech)

Personalized learning is generally seen as an alternative to so-called “one-size-fits-all”
approaches to schooling in which teachers may, for example, provide all students in a given
course with the same type of instruction, the same assignments, and the
same assessments with little variation or modification from student to student.
Personalized learning may also be called student-centered learning, since the general goal
is to make individual learning needs the primary consideration in important educational
and instructional decisions, rather than what might be preferred, more convenient, or
logistically easier for teachers and schools.
