ultraviolet rays and some visible light.

Document5.docx
Some materials produce light when excited by
the energy of ultraviolet light. These materials
are called fluorescent.
Fluorescent materials also produce light in
daylight with sunlight. However, because there
is a lot of ambient light, our eyes perceive less
light produced by fluorescence. By reducing
the visible light and keeping only the ultraviolet
rays, the fluorescence effect is easily
perceived.
The ink of some highlighters contains
fluorescent pigments. Tonic soda contains
quinine, which is fluorescent.

So now to be sure that you fulfil your

experiment, here are some tips.
Tips:
Not all highlighters are fluorescent. You will get
the best result with the yellow colour. Some
other colours like pink, orange and green can
also fluoresce. Blue and purple do not usually
fluoresce.
Before extracting the ink, make a highlighter
line on a white sheet of paper and observe with
a UV lamp.
If necessary, dilute the highlighter ink by
adding water if it is too opaque.
