Text one is a narrative passage on the writer’s experience during his visit to New

York. The text is written in first person perspective along with numerous language
techniques and descriptive words to make us understand his experience vividly and feel
as if we are experiencing hi journey along with him. He has used optimistic and positive
tone to convey his thoughts and feelings clearly.

To start off, the writer has used a temporal reference, “In May of 2011” to give us a
sense of time and indicate when his trip took place. It is a great way to start of the
text as the temporal reference is very eye catching and draws the readers into his
text. Then he proceeds to use parenthesis, “(a friend’s apartment in Manhattan, no
less)” to address his place at New York. He has used simile, “my spirits were as
high as the skyscrapers” to point his eager excitement and expectation while going
to the “Big Apple”.
Occasionally, the writer has also used subheadings, “The immigration process” to
give the readers an overview and summarize the overall paragraph. It has also made
the whole passage visually pleasing grabbed the attention of the readers.

The writer has also used ellipsis “ I had arrived..” to tell us that he has arrived in
New York but also to create a sense of suspense as we will be wondered that what
will happen next. By using ellipsis the writer has hooked the readers with the text
successfully.
The writer has ended the text with alliteration, “exceeded my expectations” to
inform the readers that his journey in New York was so great that it was beyond his
expectations. This shows that his journey was an amazing and memorable
experience and he thoroughly enjoyed every single bit of it.
