Text one is a non-fiction travelogue written by Bill Bryson.

The text is suitable to be read by all


audiences of all age.The main objective of the text is to express the writer's experience to the
audience from when he visited Naples in Italy.In his language the writer uses many figures of
speech such as metaphors and also uses different narrative techniques to grab the interest of
the reader.The writer uses metaphors such as “creatures from beyond the grave stumble out”
and “dead sea”.The use of these types of metaphors help the reader to understand the topic
better and also make the writers language seem interesting.

The writer is also very descriptive in his style of writing and describes whatever he sees and
feels to the readers we can see evidence of this when he says “walked down the steep and
slippery steps,” ,” – mean, cavernous, semi-paved alleyways, with plaster peeling off walls and
washing hung like banners between balconies that never saw sunlight”.This give imagery to the
readers and helps them to understand what the writer is talking about.He also uses many
hyphens in the texts so that he is able to more content to one sigle sentence or line.Evidence of
these hyphens can be seen in sentence “cramped bassi – tenements without baths,” “mountains
– and I mean mountains – of rubbish.” by doing so he is able extended the information of that
single line the readers are then able to understand what the writer is talking about more clearly.

We can also see the writer using statistical information to the text such as “crimes like car theft
(29,000 in one year)” in doing so the writer is able to make the text feel more authentic to the
readers who can then use this information in the future for reference.

The writer was able to successfully explain his objectives to the readers he gave proper
description of what he saw and felt in naples and used various language techniques to grab the
attention of the readers.He was able to ​convey his ideas and information on travelling and
visiting new places to the readers.
