Handout Chapter 5 (Expansion & Factorization)

Q1 Fill in the blanks.

i. When we multiply an algebraic term by another algebraic term, the coefficients and
variables are multiplied separately.
ii. ( 2 ×3 ) × x × x × y × y × y=¿ 6 x ² y ³ (index notation)
iii. (a + b) (c + d + e) = ac + ad + ae + bc + bd + be.
iv. (a + b) (a – b) is called difference of two squares.
v. In multiplication, powers of same variables are added.
vi. Factorization is reverse of expansion.
vii. Factorization is the product of two or more algebraic expressions.

Q2: Mark True or False.

i) (a + b) (a – b) = a² – b² (T/ F)
ii) 0, 1, 4, 9, 15, 25, 38………….. are perfect squares. (T/ F)
iii) (s)² – (12) ² = s² – 24. (T/ F)
iv) (a – b) ² = a² – b². (T/ F)
v) Three algebraic identities are useful for expanding algebraic expressions
which are of similar forms. (T/ F)

vi) m² – 10m + 25 = (m + 5) ² (T/ F)

Q3: Match the columns.

Column A Column B Column C

x× x×x a² – b² x³

(a + b)(a – b) 3x a² – b²

(a – b) ² a² + b² + 2ab a² + b² – 2ab

a(b + c) = ab + ac x³ Distributive law

(a + b) ² a² + b² – 2ab a² + b² + 2ab

x + x+ x Distributive law 3x
