Seaman's Adventures with the
Corps of Discovery

Summer 1803
Lewis purchases Seaman in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania for $20
while waiting for boats to be built for the expedition.

September 11, 1803


On this day, Captain Lewis first mentions his dog in the
journals when he writes that Seaman is chasing
squirrels! November 16, 1803
A Shawnee tribal member offers Captain Lewis 3
beaver skins for his dog.

August 25, 1804


Seaman "hikes" with the group, but gets tired and is sent back to
camp.

April 18, 1805


The expedition leaves Ft. Mandan.

April 25, 1805


Seaman ventures off and stays out all night! Captain Lewis
worries about his canine companion, but he returns in the
morning!

May 08, 1805


Seaman helps hunt again! He chases and kills a deer wounded by
the Corps of Discovery.

May 19, 1805


A beaver bites Seaman while swimming and he almost
bleeds to death! They save him in the nick of time!
May 29, 1805
On this night, a buffalo runs through camp within
inches of the sleeping men! Seaman chases the
June 27, 1805 buffalo away and saves them!
Seaman is constantly alarmed by the bears! He barks
all night to warn the men!

April 11, 1806


Three Watlala tribal members steal Captain Lewis's dog!
Captain Lewis sends men after them to bring Seaman back.

May 08, 1806


Seaman brings in a deer that's been wounded by one of the Corps
of Discovery.

July 15, 1806


Seaman howls with torture from mosquitos biting him!
This is the last mention of Seaman in the journals.
