TYPES OF ENZYMES

Enzymes are catalysts that, within the mild conditions of temperature, pH, and pressure
of the cells, carry out chemical reactions at amazing high rate. They are characterized by a
remarkable efficiency and specificity.

 Enzymes are classified into six categories according to the type of reaction catalyzed:

1. Oxidoreductases - The enzyme oxidoreductase catalyzes the oxidation reaction where the
electrons tend to travel from one form of a molecule to the other.

2. Transferases - The transferases enzymes help in the transportation of the functional group
among acceptors and donor molecules.

3. Hydrolases - Hydrolases are hydrolytic enzymes, which catalyze the hydrolysis reaction
by adding water to cleave the bond and hydrolyze it.

4. Lyases - Adds water, carbon dioxide or ammonia across double bonds or eliminate these
to create double bonds.

5. Ligases - The Isomerases enzymes catalyze the structural shifts present in a molecule,
thus causing the change in the shape of the molecule.

6. Isomerases - The Ligases enzymes are known to charge the catalysis of a ligation
process.
