ALCATEL-LUCENT

9926 BASE BAND UNIT

The 9926 BBU offers wireless operators an easy way to build W-CDMA or LTE coverage
while re-using existing cabinets (GSM, CDMA, Outdoor Power Supply unit, existing 19inch
rack…). It enables operators to deploy a zero footprint product as it can be integrated in
any cabinet where a 2U and 19” slot is available, allowing operators to reduce their Total
Cost of Ownership (TCO).

FEATURES
The 9926 BBU includes the controller board and the baseband
processing boards (modems) in a very compact 2U (88mm)
unit. In addition, the 9926 BBU supports up to 6 CPRI optical
fiber connections, which allows up to 6 radio modules (6
sectors) to be directly connected or up to 6 remote radio
modules per fiber with daisy chain mode.

The Digital 2U eNB consists of four types of hardware boards:

• Controller Unit (CCM): Controls OAM management, transport, external/internal alarm connectivity and external
synchronization reference interfaces.
• Modem Unit (CEM): Main call processing engine, base band transmit/receive digital signal processing. A 9926 BBU
supports one to three CEMs. The CEM leads in W-CDMA Channel Element density, and has been evolved to
support LTE.
• RBP (user Rack Back Plane): supports all internal links between the CCM-U and CEM-U modules; and
• RUC (Rack User Commissioning): fan unit commissioning of non-volatile memories, and fan alarms.

The BBU works with Remote Radio solutions, TRDU and MC-TRX in 3G.

BENEFITS
The Alcatel-Lucent 9926 BBU has been designed to facilitate easy installation with auto commissioning, reducing
deployment costs & minimizing migration costs. The hardware solution supports extensive re-use of existing
assets: cabinets, power supply, battery back-up, RF assets, antennas, transport, making it Operator CAPEX-
friendly. The software solution will minimize OPEX as the architecture is fully compatible and capable of
interworking with legacy networks. The solution offers seamless mobility and service continuity for customers
and offers tracing, logging & measurements for operators.

9926 BBU enables operators to deploy a true zero-footprint product as it can be integrated in any cabinet where a 2U
and 19” slot is available. This allows operators to minimize their Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), to overcome site
constraints and, to introduce LTE with best time-to-market.

9926 BBU offers numerous deployment options, the most typical being
• In an existing GSM, CDMA or 19 inch cabinet
• In a distributed architecture with RRHs near the antennae (refer to Error! Reference source not
found.)
• As an integral component of the 9941 Smart BTS and the 9100 Multi-standard BTS solutions
• In an outdoor Power Supply Unit cabinet housing upto 6RRHs and additional battery backup

9926 BBU solution can concentrate the CPRI traffic from legacy networks together with its own traffic and thus use
common fibres up to the RRH. If different bands are used RRH can be daisy-chained.
