In your previous lesson, you have learned about dictionary, thesaurus, and or online resources.
Furthermore, through these various reading materials you were able to familiarize with the meaning of
unfamiliar words from the stories/ poems listened to. So now you are ready to increase your knowledge by
noting significant details in various text types that we are about to read.

Let’s
Let’srecall
Recall
Do you love to read? Do you just want to listen to stories or do
you want to read them by yourself? What kind of text or story do you like?

Let’s Know This

Whenever you are reading a text, you should be constantly noting the important details. These
details from what you read are important for you to develop reading comprehension. These will help you

Maria went to town But she forgets the tray

On a pleasant summer day She carried on her head,
To sell five dozen eggs A naughty dog behind,

She carried in a tray. Barked at the little maid.

She counted in her mind. Down fell the tray and all

The money she would get, The eggs she kept in store.
The things that she could buy And sadly, she went home.

Let’s Remember This

NOTING DETAILS is important in reading skill for children to learn. We note details by asking WH-
questions who, what, where, when and how.
Taking notes helps you remember the most important points. When taking notes remember the following:
1. Write down the key words and phrases.

2. Write down only the main ideas and importance details.

3. Use a word or a short phrase to explain an idea.

4. Use your own words so that you can understand them later.

5. Write legibly so that you can easily read your notes when you refer to them later.
Source: Skill Builders for Efficient Reading, Wilhellmina Borjal et al.
C. Directions: Now that you have already learned what Noting Details is all about, I want to know if
you can note details by answering the following questions:
a. In the song, what did she think of on her way to the market?
____________________________________________________________
b. What happened when the naughty dog barked at Maria?
____________________________________________________________
c. How did Maria feel after the unpleasant incident?
____________________________________________________________
d. How about you, what did you feel?
____________________________________________________________
Congratulations! You have already learned how to note details. This time, let us learn how to involve our
feelings by learning how to infer.

We can infer or guess the traits and feelings of the characters on what they say, what others say about
them, by what they think and feel, and by what they do.

Example: A naughty dog behind, barked at the little maid. What could Maria feel? Encircle the face that
corresponds to your answer.

Activity 2
Good job! You are really working hard in our activities. Now let us have more fun in learning.
Directions: Write on the pointed edge around THE SMILING STAR the 5 traits or feelings of
Maria in the song.

HAPPY
SURPRISE
DREAMER
SCARED
LAZY
HARD WORKING
BORED
KIND

Good work! It is good that you were able to determine the feelings of Maria in the song. This time let us know
what happened to Maria while she was on her way. Can you still remember what happened to Maria along the
way?

Let’s Remember This

The SEQUENCE is the order in which events take place. Understanding the sequence of events can help you
know what is happening and why it happens

Source: English_gr_4_learners_matls__q1_p.32

Let’s Do This
Let’s Do This

Activity 3
It is good that you already understood about sequencing of events.

A. Directions: Now, number the events below in the order that they occurred in the song. Write the number 1-4
on the blanks being number 1 as the first event and 4 the last.

__________ Sadly, she went home, but wiser than before.

__________ Maria went to town to sell five dozen eggs she carried on her head.
__________ A naughty dog barked at her and down fell the tray and all.
__________ She counted in her mind the money she would get while walking like a coquette.

Another way in organizing the sequence of events is by using signal words. This will inform the readers about
the series of events that happen in a certain order.

Let’s Remember This

The words FIRST, NEXT, THEN, and LASTLY are called SIGNAL WORDS. Signal words introduce the
steps in a process or sequence of events.
FIRST is the beginning of the event, NEXT is the second event, THEN is the third event, and LASTLY is
the end of the story or narrative.
Source: English_gr_4_learners_matls__q1_p.50
What happens first? What happens after that? And what happens last? These are the questions that you should
think of before you start.
Try to look at the pictures, which comes first, next, then and lastly?

Out came a tiny leaf. It had fruits.

It had more leaves Juan planted a seed.

and taller branches
The following examples will help you determine what happens first, what happens after that, and what happens
last?
Example: FIRST, Juan planted a seed.

NEXT, out came a tiny leaf.

THEN, it had more leaves and taller branches.

LASTLY, it had fruits.

Good Job! You are on the right track now! You already understood the way events were sequenced. This time,
let us try the given exercise:

B. Directions: Write the sequence of events from your answers in Exercise III. A. in a paragraph form using
signal words.

Another helpful learning tool for you to organize, clarify, or simplify difficult information is by using visual
guides or Graphic Organizers. Take a look and understand what Graphic Organizers are all about.

Let’s Remember This

GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS are charts or visuals which are used to represent what we think of. They can help
us understand what we read. In sequencing events, we use organizers like the storyboard, flow chart, story train,
chain of events chart and sequence chart.

The following are some examples of graphic organizers;

Example: FIRST, Juan planted a seed.
NEXT, out came a tiny leaf.
THEN, it had more leaves and taller branches.
LASTLY, it had fruits.

First
Out came a tiny leaf.
Juan planted a seed. Next
Then

It had more
Last
It had fruits. leaves and taller
branches.

What does one usually have when he or she celebrates his or her birthday? Have you seen a cake? I
want you to read the passage entitled “A Cake for Kate” and take note of some details.

A CAKE FOR KATE

Gretel Laura M. Cadiong

Kate was turning ten. But she was not happy. Birthdays were ordinary days for her. She never had a birthday
party. She never had a cake on her birthday. But she wished she could have one.
After school, she would stand near the gate to sell rice cakes that her mother made.
One late afternoon, Kate saw a big box on one of the benches. She picked it up and opened it. There were
glasses, spoons and forks. There were also boxes of wrist watches, a bag of marbles, chocolates, combs, and
some dresses. She closed the big box. She brought it to the principal’s office.
The next day, Mr. Basa, the school principal and a lady came to Kate’s class. The lady was Mrs. Salas, the
owner of the box. Mrs. Salas thanked Kate.
“I just arrived from Cebu and the things inside the box are my pasalubong for my family,” she said. “I was in
your school because I had to fetch my nephew. Then, I forgot that box,” she added.
Sunday came. It was Kate’s birthday. After attending mass, Kate and her mother went home. They were
surprised to see Mrs. Salas waiting for them.
“Happy birthday, Kate,” Mrs. Salas said. “I brought you a gift. I asked your teacher about you and I am happy
to know that you are not only helpful daughter but an honest girl, too.” She gave Kate a red box tied with a
