Discourse: Rizal's Life, Works, and Writings

By: Xiao Chua

Xiao Chua, a renowned Filipino historian, started a webinar on Rizal’s 160th

Birthday. In this discussion, Xiao Chua provided several insightful pieces of
informations about the works, legacy, and life, of our national Hero Doctor Jose
Rizal. In this discussion, Xiao Chua began by talking about the importance, or
significance of learning a thing or two from the life and legacy of Doctor Jose Rizal
in our Philippine National History. Here Xiao Chua not only introduced him as a
writer, and a revolutionary but also as an artist, an eye opener, and an
ophthalmologist that has opened the eyes of his fellow Filipino men, rich or poor
alike, as the person that was admired greatly by many people for generations,
yearning him as a true image of what a national hero is. One of the key talks in
this webinar is about the idea that the legacy of Rizal is not just about the
individual achievements that he has attained, but also the fact that he lived and
he experienced the different struggles of Filipinos.
The talk also mentioned the two novels by Doctor Jose Rizal, it mentioned
that the novels are about the intention of Rizal to raise awareness about the social
and political issues revolving around the country at the time that the Spaniards
colonized us. Chua emphasized that Rizal's writings were not just works of fiction
but were grounded in historical realities and personal experiences.
All in all, the video by Chua is a valuable source of understanding the
different lessons that the life of Doctor Jose Rizal can imprint on us in modern
times. The talk was informative and it has answered some of myaw ongoing
questions on how can the life of doctor Jose Rizal affect me and my insights on
how the modern world works today.
