Introduction
 Section views are an important
aspect of design and
documentation and are used to
improve the clarity and reveal
interior features of parts and
structures
 Sectional drawings are
multiview technical drawings
that contain special views of a
part or parts, views that reveal
interior features
 Primary reason for section
view: to eliminate hidden lines,
so that the drawing can be
understood or visualized more
easily
Introduction

Sectioning uses a technique that is based on passing an imaginary cutting

plane that cuts through the object to reveal interior features
Applications of sectional views

Mechanical assemblies are sectioned to assist in the assembly of

components and to aid visualization
Applications of sectional views

Cutaway drawings of concrete box girder bridge superstructure used

in civil engineering
Applications of sectional views

Sectioned technical illustrations are used to describe

interior features of complicated assemblies
CAD Technique for creating sectional views

 With 3-D CAD, it is possible to create the sections of parts or structures

automatically by specifying the positon of the cutting plane relative to the object
 Then selecting which part of the object to display by picking one side of the
cutting plane or the other
Cutting plane
types
Cutting plane lines –
show where the cutting
plane passes thro the object
and represent the edge
view of the cutting plane
and are drawn in the view
adjacent to the section
view

 Horizontal cutting
plane: the cutting
plane appears as an
edge in the front view
and is normal
(perpendicular to the
LOS) in the top view;
 The top half of the
object is removed and
the top view is drawn
in section

 Frontal cutting plane:

the cutting plane
appears as an edge in
the top view and is
normal in the front
view;

object is removed and

 Profile cutting
plane: the cutting
plane appears as an
edge in the top and
front view and is
normal in the
profile view;
 The left or right
half of the object is
removed and the
profile view is
drawn in section

 Full section: made by

passing the imaginary
cutting plane
completely through
the object
 Half section: are
created by passing an
imaginary cutting
plane only halfway
through an object –
mostly used on
symmetrical parts
 Broken out sections:
used only when a
portion of the object
needs to be sectioned
– for saving time
Summary
 Section views are powerful aids in the design,
documentation and construction of products
 There are many different types of section views
 CAD is useful for automating the creation of section
views and adding section lines
