Hydrogen has a high specific energy density of 120 MJ/kg but requires a large volume for storage at normal temperatures and pressures. Storing 1 kg of hydrogen at 50 barg and 25°C requires a volume of only 240 liters. Alkaline electrolyzers are generally more energy efficient than PEM electrolyzers, with specific energy consumptions of ≤4.3 kWh/Nm3 and 4.5-7.5 kWh/Nm3 respectively. Alkaline electrolyzers also have a practical load range of 50-100% compared to 10-100% for PEM electrolyzers.

Volume at NTP 1 kg of hydrogen occupies a Storing 1 kg of hydrogen at a volume of 11.1 m3 at 1 atm and pressure of 50 barg and temperature 0⁰C of 25⁰C requires a volume of 240 liters only and storing at 200 barg and 25⁰C requires only 61 liters of volume Specific Energy Density (mass 120 The specific energy of methane, the basis), MJ/kg primary constituent of natural gas is 55.6 MJ/kg. Natural gas which has constituents other than methane has on average a specific energy density of 53-54 MJ/kg Specific Energy Consumption, Currently, alkaline electrolyzers are kWh/Nm3 more energy efficient compared to Alkaline Electrolyzer ≤4.3 (electrolyzer stack) PEM electrolyzers. Figures for PEM Electrolyzer 4.5-7.5 (electrolyzer stack) specific energy consumption may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Practical Load Range Load or turndown can differ from Alkaline Electrolyzer 50-100% manufacturer to manufacturer but in PEM Electrolyzer 10-100% general PEM electrolyzers provide better turndown or part-load operation. Hydrogen Purity, %: Values may differ from manufacturer Alkaline Electrolyzer ≥99.8 to manufacturer. But in general, PEM Electrolyzer ≥99.99 higher purity is obtained from PEM Electrolyzers. Operating Pressure, barg Values may differ from manufacturer Alkaline Electrolyzer ≤32 to manufacturer. But in general, PEM Electrolyzer ≤50 higher pressure is required for PEM Electrolyzers. Operating Temperature, ⁰C: Values may differ from manufacturer Alkaline Electrolyzer 80-90 to manufacturer. But in general, PEM Electrolyzer 50-80 higher temperature is required for Alkaline Electrolyzers.
