1 PURPOSE
This System Description depicts the Oil Recovery Systems to be installed within the Changuinola I Mini
Hydro Power Plant area, to guard against pollution of the river resulting from accidental oil spill in the
Power House and the rupture of the power transformers located outside the powerhouse.
2 GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Drainage and Oil Recovery System will consist of one integrated system that will guard water against
pollution cause from accidental oil spill at the powerhouse drainage or at the main power transformers
located outside, based on the following criteria:
An oil separator pre-fabricated device, in the transformer’s area to recover any oil leakage from
transformers oil tank seepage or rupture and recover any spilled that can flow through the powerhouse
drainage system.
3 LOCAL REGULATION
4 DESIGN CRITERIA
The Drainage and Oil Recovery System for the powerhouse will consist, on the connection of the
drainage oil system of the powerhouse and the drainage of the transformer bay to a pre-fabricated oil
separator device, filtering any spill that can pollute the Changuinola River through the discharge station
sump.
The possible oil from the drainage system and the transformer bay will be routed to the flow regulator
sump, before the Oil Separator Unit using cast iron soil pipes interconnecting. A flow regulator will be
installed at the outlet of the flow regulator sump to regulate the inlet flow in the separator. In case a major
spill occur (up to 1000 litters approximated) that can overflow the capacity of the Oil Separator Unit
storage volume an Alarm will send the signal to main panel board in the control room of the main
powerhouse monitoring the quality of the water flowing through the device and an automatic shut-off valve
will be use to isolate the separator in case of the presence of a high oil level signal at the Alarm module
that will send the signal to main panel board too.

The Oil Separator Unit operates with the gravity principle combined with an integrated coalesce. Sludge
and heavier particles separate and fall down to the bottom of the tank, while the oil, being lighter than the
water, rises to the surface. Small oil particles with a low rising velocity are trapped in the filter by the
coalescence effect to bigger drops, which are easy to separate. The oil separator unit will be designed to
maintain a 5ppm maximum release hydrocarbons to a natural stream according local regulation.
During maintenance period manual shut-off valves have installed at the outlet pipe to isolate the drainage
lines.

According COPEN HLA-CHA-03-GMA-DD-00-001 – Mini Hydro – Power House– Drainage system-
Calculation Report item3.2
[9]
According INTERLOGICA calculation considered five simultaneously sprinklers actuation at 30 gpm
(6,81m3/h) each sprinkler
[10]
According Ref [5] adopted 7,5mx6,7m bay area for infiltration and same rate of l/s/sqm as Power House
[11
Based on OTR Part A for an average 4151 mm/year rainfall or 346mm/month was assumed the extremely
rainfall occur in one day result in aprox. 30 mm/h/sqm (0,030m/h x 50,25sqm x 1,1safty factor)
[12]
According INTERLOGICA calculation 420 gpm (95m3/h) deluge system and 30 minutes fire plus 15%
safety factor we have 47,5 x 1,15 = 55 m3/h
