INTRODUCTION

UNISON is a trade union that represents and acts for members working in a range of
public services and utilities, whether they’re employed by private companies, public
authorities or in the community and voluntary sector. UNISON is the UK's largest
union, serving more than 1.3 million members. They represent full-time and
part-time staff who provide public services, although they may be employed in both
the public and private sectors.

What is a trade union?

A trade union is a group of employees who join together to maintain and improve
their conditions of employment. Trade unions bargain for better pay and conditions
and provide assistance and services to their members.
Types of structure

- Hierarchical (tall) structure:

This type of structure is organized in layers, with the higher layers having more
authority than those below them. The advantage of this kind of structure is that
every role is clearly defined. Decisions are taken quickly by those at the top of the
organization but talking about communication, it is a slower point as the message
has to pass through all the layers.

This is one example of how an hierarchical structure looks. It has many layers but it
always has someone in charge of everything; but it has been helped by others below
them but in higher positions from the ones below.
- Horizontal or flat structures:
Here, in this structure,, there are fewer layers and more people in each layer.
Decisions are made by the need to account of several groups within a layer.
Communication is usually more effective than the hierarchical structure. Flat
structures often work well with skilled and motivated workers with incentives and
regard

This is a perfect example, showing that there are very few layers but more people
conform to them, so it is way easier to work together and have the results each
company wants to achieve.
- Matrix structures:
The people that work in this type of structure need to have or acquire a variety of
skills that are drawn from many parts or functional areas of the business such as
marketing, operations, finance, and human resources. These can be organized into
teams to complete projects and it that way results are shown faster.

In this example, it is shown pretty well the way this structure is divided. People with
the same abilities or skills are set into groups, so they can take advantage of their
knowledge and put it into the company's goals.
UNISON STRUCTURE

Unison does not manage only one type of structure but the case shows us that the
“tall structure” is their main one, but in general they implement the 3 types of
structures.
This is because regions they have many people and they all participate in the
decision-making of the same, also because they are divided by groups according to
their abilities or areas in which they are better, human resources do an excellent job
in this area of the company. the company, in summary, the most marked structure
that UNISON has is the tall structure but it implements the others so that they work in
conjunction with decision-making.
