Giles Hampton was spending a short holiday in Wales. One of his friends, named Beverly, lived there in a house in
Caernavonshire, near the Snowdon mountains. There was an ancient church called Flaban Flawr near this house, so
Beverly called his new house Flaban Flawr too. When Beverly
invited Giles to spend his holydays there, he was very happy as he
was very interested in geology and Wales was of his interest to study
rocks and stones.
Giles arrived on October 10th. For the first week of his stay the
weather was fine and they went together on several geological
expeditions. But on October 18th Beverly had business in the local
market town so Giles decided to make an all-day excursion to a
place in the other side of the mountains. The sky was cloudy when
Giles set off. In his bag, he had put sandwiches, geological
hammers, and information from Parry, the servant, about his route
across the mountains.
He arrived after 12 and started to examine the rocks. He finished
around 3:30, packed his things and started on the journey back to
Flaban Fawr. The sky was cloudy again and a light rain began to fall. Then, a thick damp mist came down and covered
everything. Soon the mist grew thicker and he could only see a few feet in front of him.
On his early journey he had looked for landmarks but now, in the mist, everything looked different. Suddenly he realized
he had taken the wrong path. He was lost and confused. He could spend the night on the hillside, but he didn’t want to
worry his friend. He knew Beverly would become anxious and organize a search party.
In that moment he heard footsteps. Giles shouted and a
voice answered in Welsh. From out of the mist came an
old man with a huge dog by his side. Although the man
was tall, he looked straight and tall. He was wearing a
dark cloak that came down to his ankle. His hair was long
and white, and his red face shone with kindness.
The old man spoke again in Welsh but Giles didn’t
understand, so he tried to explain that he was lost and he
wanted to go to Flaban Fawr. Then, the old man took a
map and showed him the way back. Finally, he gave the
map to Giles.

Giles started walking along the path that the old man had
shown him. When he turned around the old man had
disappeared. As he could only see a few feet ahead, he
moved carefully. Soon the path led him down on a very steep hillside and suddenly his foot turned on a a sharp stone and
he almost fell. He heard the stone rolling down faster and faster until the noise stopped. A few seconds later, Giles heard a
crash as the stone hit the ground hundreds of feet below. The path led him to the edge of a cliff!!! Then, he looked at the
map and saw there was no cliff on the route that the old man had shown him. He sat down and decided that he would just
have to wait.
One hour later, he heard a voice shouting on the hillside below, He recognized the voice of Beverly’s servant who had set
out to search for him. They came back to the house and Giles told him he had got lost because of the weather but didn’t say
anything about the stranger in the mist.
At dinner, Beverly told him that he was lucky because there had been some terrible accidents there. Four years before a
man had been found dead at the bottom of the cliff. He had fallen off. In his pocket the police had found an old and out
dated map. The map didn’t show that there had been a landslide long time ago and that part of the hill had disappeared.
When Giles heard about the story, he told Beverly about the stranger in the mist. Then they called Mr. Roberts, who kept
the old map. Mr, Roberts came to the house and they compared the two maps, They were yellow with age and the writing
was very old. At the bottom of the map it said Madog ap Rhys 1707. Mr, Roberts explained that Madog ap Rhys was a
strange, lonely man that lived alone on the hillside. He died in 1720, before the path had been destroyed. Whenever there
was mist, Madog ap Rhys would walk among the hills, wearing a dark cloak, with his dog. He drew the map and always
carried a copy with him to give to the lost travelers. A story said that his spirit still walked among the hills.
