Reflective Statement
During this semester, a great deal of writing skills have been taught. Something I learned
as the semester progressed was how to draw up my own questions about information to try and
learn more about the topic. This was mainly learned from doing the QQCs. This was because the
students were tasked with reading about a topic and coming up with their own question about
something that was in the article. This helps to not take everything at face value and to question
the information you take in instead of just reading it. Another thing I learned was how to build on
an idea. This semester was essentially about taking a topic and writing numerous different
projects about that topic or something pertaining to it. It was difficult at first to find new
information about the topic for each project but this challenge proved to actually be helpful in the
long run. Learning to be able to keep building on top of a topic when one thinks there is nothing
more to it is an important task. Being challenged to do something is also better for the brain than
doing it on your own time, I have also learned. Many times during the semester I was mentally
challenged but from these challenges I believe I had some of my best work.
The global revision included in my website focused mainly on making the overall essay
easier to read for the reader. Going over the essay again, I realized it was difficult to understand
at times and could get repetitive also. To make it easier to understand, I made numerous revisions
throughout the essay to make the overall project easier to comprehend. The two artifacts I
included were from the last project. These artifacts encompass what I have learned in this past
semester from this class. One of them is a short story and the other is a formal letter. It made me
proud to find myself capable of writing in two genres that are not conventional in most other
English classes I have taken. Not only did I successfully write in these two genres, but I also
used them to support an ideal that I feel strongly about. Being able to accomplish all of this made
me proud and upon completing that work I truly realized how far I had come since the beginning
of the semester. I was not nearly as capable of supporting an idea or researching a thesis at the
beginning of the semester. The projects that were assigned in this class really did open up many
opportunities to learn new skills and to refine ones that I had learned previously. Moving
forward, I now appreciate how important it is to be open to new ways of writing and to
constantly look for new ways to refine the skills I already have.
