Shane - Good afternoon ma’am, Good afternoon classmates! We are here to present a
short story entitled “Ticket, Please” by D.H. Lawrence. But first, before we get into the
story, I would like to first explain why this is the chosen style of our powerpoint
presentation. Well it is obvious, since the title is “Ticket, Please” and it revolves around
a train station, as you can see it looks like a ticket, me and my partner, browse a
template that will connects on our topic and the setting happened in 1918, we just not
depend on the template itself but we expound our view more and this is the outcome of
our presentation. I would like to discuss first our word of the day related to the story.
“Virago” - according to Merriam Webster, a woman of great stature, strength, and
courage: The original Latin meaning of virago was "female warrior". But in later
centuries the meaning shifted toward the negative. Here in this story we will talk about
how strong the females are in the time of world war 1 in which since the men are busy
fighting in the war, women here are working the works of a man too, They are portrayed
as brazen-like soldiers, and they then attack a man in their fierce, male way, and we will
get further on it all throughout the presentation.

Miguel - Before we proceed on the contents, first let us know the author. David Herbert
Lawrence, also known as, D.H. Lawrence is an English writer, novelist, poet and
essayist. His works reflect on modernity, industrialization, sexuality, emotional health,
vitality, spontaneity and instinct. Lawrence is best known for his novels Sons and
Lovers, The Rainbow, Women in Love and Lady Chatterley's Lover. In these books,
Lawrence explores the possibilities for life within an industrial setting. In particular
Lawrence is concerned with the nature of relationships that can be had within such a
setting.

The story inspiration of Ticket, please. Is during wartime Europe women are placed in
when they join a predominantly male workforce is presented in Lawrence's real-life
style. The entire tram system's crew is portrayed as the "other" in this scenario. During
this era, a little trivia about this, is that, although being a tram conductor is dangerous,
women still went for this job because they believe that they can do the work of a man.
Along with its packed cars and rowdy passengers, Lawrence describes it “as the most
dangerous tram-service in England." Nevertheless the dangerous nature of the job, and
their similar ages, brings the male and female workers together.

The setting of the story is set in 1918, during world war 1, located in Northern France, in
Belgium. It takes place against the backdrop of World War I, a time when men are
away fighting and women take over the traditional roles of men. In this story, women are
employed as streetcar drivers on a dangerous line that tends to stop in the dark night.
In Characters, but before that, ahm I would like to say that these pictures are not the
actual portrayers of the characters in the story, we just visualized it and found pictures
related to the story, because when we tried to browse on the internet we cannot see any
examples of visual presentations. Proceeding to the topic, the Main Character of the
Story is Annie Stone, she is anything but soft, dependent, and Victorian. She could, the
narrator says, "hold her own against 10,000." From the start, she is depicted as a
potentially emasculating figure, one who can order men around, and rob them of their
manhood. She is intelligent and wants a real relationship with John, not simply sex. But
when she can't get what she wants, she takes on an aggressive, masculine role,
culminating in hitting him with the buckle end of a belt. Next is, John Thomas, He has a
temper, indicated by the fact he becomes furious when addressed by the insulting
nickname Coddy. Most of all, he is a womanizer: he loves and leaves many of the good
looking women working the tram line. He swaggers around in a self-assured way and is
willing to take risks. Since most of the healthy young men are at the front, he is a
marked contrast to the other weak and "crippled" men working on the trams—and thus
very desirable to the women. Nora Purdy, She is also described as somewhat
secretive. Since John has toyed with her, she joins Annie in ganging up on him. And
Lastly, Muriel Baggaley, Laura, Sharp, and Polly Birkin: Some of the tramline women
John has loved and left, who want revenge on him. They follow Annie's directions in
attacking him by pinching him, slapping him, and pulling his hair, though it is done more
in "good fun" at first, suggesting a release of sexual energy more than malice. Later, the
violence escalates. All these women, like Annie and Nora, want John to choose one
woman and remain faithful to her.

Shane - Proceeding to the symbolism of the story, the “hideous villages of workmen’s
homes,” and the “dreary little town of industry, symbolizes the narrator’s attitude towards
industrialisation conveyed through adjectives, such as “hideous villages of workmen’s
homes,” and the “dreary little town of industry,” which all demonstrate his distaste for
factories and the destruction of nature. This is in contrast to the description of the “clear
air” and the “clean” line of the hills, which portrays his love for nature. The Tickets
Please short story by D.H Lawrence is a tale that explores man’s relationship with
industrialisation and modernity. Set in England, the story follows the life of a young
woman who works as a conductor on a tram.

For the theme of the story, the incidental effects of progress on humanity are shown
through the Lawrentian central theme of the relationship between men and women.
Here, the weaker sex and the stronger sex are respectively and ironically embodied by
Annie Stone and John Thomas Raynor. For the conflict, Sexual conflict plays a major
role in analyzing the situations as well as in determining the meaning of the language.
Although the examples of sexual conflict may not be directly implied in some of the
stories, indirect allusions to such conflicts throughout the stories make it easier for the
reader to recognize them. This story explores the situation of women in the tram
system, which, because the men are away fighting in the war, is entirely conducted by
girls. One man, however, stays behind for an unknown reason.

Miguel - And for the point of view, It is in third person objective and first person point of
view as we can see the emotions and know the thoughts of the characters while
throwing each other’s dialogue. Now, for the summary of the story, we made it a sneak
peek instead of narrating the whole story with you. ‘Tickets, Please’ is a story about a
man who works on the trams of Nottingham during the First World War. John Thomas –
his very name is slang for the ‘male member’, or penis – is a cock of the walk, a jack the
lad, a man who thinks he has it all. We will know more about the story as my partner
discussed it to you.

Shane - Very well said partner, now for the plot of the story, I’m sorry ma’am if we didn’t
follow your order in making it in triangular form, because we wanted to put on such
illustrations, that comes from our imaginations because this story doesn’t have any
adaptation nor illustration, and we just made up all of this, by that I mean, we just
searched peoples, and images that we think is related to the stories. Now moving on to
the context,, Annie was just a new tram conductor, she is newly hired that is why John
Thomas, the known “womanizer” showed an interest on her and did everything to get
her attention because John Thomas hobbies was to date pretty tram conductors, but
Annie doesn’t pay attention to him, but that doesn’t stop John Thomas on pursuing her,
until she gets Annie’s trust and they go out together to the funfair. He bought Annie a
drink, but to his surprise she ask for another one so he thinks that maybe she is taking
advantage on him the audacity right, that is why he decided to invite Annie to go
outside, “just to know her more, and to have privacy” they talk and talk and talk, until
this man, decided to make a move on Annie, but yeah Annie being the strong girl do
bong soon, pushes him away, “oh man, don't you ever try, it is just our first date” and
that hurted the ego of John Thomas.

Miguel - and that was Annie’s thoughts, that he hurted the ego of John Thomas, but my
boy is not weak, when they met again in the fair, John charms her to the point that
Annie falls in love with him and they become somewhat of an item.

Shane - Oh yes your boy, that is why the climax of the story is John breaking up with
Annie just because Annie is getting serious? The audacity right? And not just that she
discovers that John has been ‘walking out’ with many of the other girls working on the
trams. That is why they plotted revenge for John.
Miguel - I cannot disagree with their plan, it is indeed the best, that is why they
gathered in the waiting room and waited for John to arrive. He comes in in his usual
cocksure way, “sunning himself in the presence of so many damsels.” One girl makes
him a cup of tea and another girl called Muriel asks, "who're you going home with
tonight, John Thomas?" When John tells them he is going home alone they insist he
has to choose one of them to take with him. When he refuses they begin to attack him,
hitting, slapping, and kicking him. One girl "Nora had held at the back of his collar, and
was actually strangling him."

Shane - Yep, and finally, defeated and afraid, John tells them, if he had to choose, he
would choose Annie. Annie pretends she doesn't care, telling him to choose again, but
after John leaves she feels awful.

Miguel - Serves him right for being a womanizer, and that’s the end of the story. Well
the lesson here is let me quote the famous statement in Filipino, the “makakahanap ka
rin ng katapat mo” and indeed, John Thomas found his karma.

Shane - Yes! And before we end our presentation let us end with a quote, “One by one
she slew her fears, and then planted a flower garden over their graves.” this quote
represents Annie, that her fears, the hurt, the pain she received from Thomas, she
made it her strong point to conquer the pain and planted a flowers on the grave Thomas
caused, signifying that it is not the end, and she will be okay in just time, and hoping for
finding a man that will treat her right.

Miguel - Yes, and for me "Sometimes it takes a real woman walking into your life to
show you exactly why you're not a real man", John Thomas needs a hard slap on his
brain for him to be awaken that not all women are toys and naive, that he can date, get
their heart and dump them whenever or wherever he wanted to just because he is not
ready for commitment. That may serve him a lesson and be guilty of his acts. And that
is the end of our presentation, we hope that you have learned a lesson and enjoyed the
story as we enjoyed discussing it to you. Thank you!
