Introduction
A brief history
Wire wrapping and weaving has gained a big popularity during the past decades , however these techniques
have been there for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence shows the appearance of wire elements in
the thumbs of pharaohs in Egypt, and we can also find wire elements in the jewelry made by the Sumerian
Dynasty, which can be found in the British Museum.
While wire wrapping had been almost forgotten for a very long time, during the Medieval period, gold and silver
wire was traded between multiple countries, then used to create religious symbols and chains. Techniques have
been handed down from generation to generation.
In the Victorian Age, wire became a very popular element for sculpturing, then jewelry making.
Today, hundreds of artists create a huge variety of wire wrapped and woven jewelry with the combination of
gemstones, crystals, wood, and glass elements.

2. Bowen Knot
This immensely popular symbol has been used as a
heraldic badge, which became associated with infinity,
love, and friendship. There are several variations of this
knot used by multiple cultures around the world.
Making a Bowen Knot with wire is mostly simple and it
can be incorporated in multiple wire wrapping projects,
such as decoration for cabochon settings (as we will
learn in the projects section later), main element for
earrings, rings, or a modified knot as Cross pendant.

TIP:
We can create these symbols in any size we desire, depending on the design we want to incorporate it
to. For a smaller symbol (in between 1 and 2 cm big), I recommend you use 22ga (0.6 mm) wire. For a
symbol in between 2 cm and 3 cm, we can use 20ga (0.8 mm) wire. For a symbol larger than 3 cm up,
we can use 18ga (1 mm) wire.

TIP:
Keeping our eyes focused on creating the wraps and weaves even
and tight can be tiring for our eyes. I always recommend, if possible, to
work in natural light, sitting close to a window, or in your garden. A
poor indoor light might cause eye problems, and you don't want to get
your eyes tired very fast.

Spiral Earrings
This beginner earrings tutorial is an easy pattern where you can use any of your favorite beads.
First, we will create the 2 beaded charms with the horizontally drilled beads, using any bead shapes in
between 10-20 mm long, following the steps we learned in the techniques section. Then, we must create
the 2 simple ear wires.
Tools needed: chain (or flat nose) pliers, wire flush cutter, bail making (or round nose) pliers.
For the beaded charms take 2 pieces of 21ga (0.7 mm) or 20ga (0.8 mm) wires with the length of 2 inches
(5 cm), each.
For the ear wires take 2 wires of the 18ga (1 mm) wire, with the length of 4 inches (10 cm), each.

TIP:
If you choose to give your jewelry an antiqued look, the process is simple
and very easy. I recommend you use Liver of Sulphur gel. Follow the
steps:
1. Add 2 drops of gel to a glass of hot water. Mix it well.
2. Insert your finished jewelry into the mixture. Let is stay for a very
short time, until your jewelry gets dark (I recommend you not to
wait until it gets black, instead remove your jewelry when it has a
dark brown color)
3. Rinse your jewelry with clean water (or mix hot water with
bicarbonate and let your jewelry stay in the mix for a few minutes,
to stop the oxidation process).
4. Use a soft steel wool to polish your jewelry from the dark oxidation,
until the copper gets shiny and light gray /brown colored.
Extra TIP:
If you do not like the color of the dark patina, I often use the next
process: I add 2 drops of the gel to a glass of water with room
temperature. You might need to wait at least 10 minutes until your
jewelry will start to get darker, then remove it from the mixture once it
is brown (not too dark). Follow the polishing process until your jewelry
has a light brownish color, slightly darker than a bare copper.

In this tutorial we will learn how to incorporate this simple Bowen Celtic knot technique into a beautiful
ring which is amazingly comfortable to wear.
Tools needed: chain (or flat nose) pliers, wire flush cutter, bail making (or round nose) pliers.

TIPS:
1. To decorate your ring with small beads, you can add a bead to each marquise shape,
inserting a short weaving wire into the hole of the bead, then wrapping both weaving
wire ends around the sides of the marquise shape.
2. Use a thicker base wire (for example 20ga (0.8 mm) wire), to make a stronger ring.
3. After practicing the pattern, you can try to make the same ring with half hard copper or
silver wire as well, making a more solid ring in this way.

After finishing your jewelry, if oxidized or not, I recommend you
keep it in a closed nylon bag while you are not wearing it, to avoid
contact with air. This will help your jewelry to stay shiny for a longer
time. Wearing copper jewelry for a longer period might cause a
minor change in the color of the metal, caused by oxidation.
Occasionally, you can use a polishing pad to make it shine again.

Triquetra Earrings
This simple earrings tutorial is a versatile project where you can highlight your favorite beads.
First, we will create the 2 beaded charms, using any bead shapes in between 10-20 mm long,
following the steps we learned in the techniques section. Then, we must create the 2 simple ear wires.
Tools needed: chain (or flat nose) pliers, wire flush cutter, bail making (or round nose) pliers.
For the beaded charms take 2 pieces of 22ga (0.6 mm) wires with the length of 6 inches (15 cm),
each.
For the ear wires take 2 wires of the 18ga (1 mm) wire, with the length of 3 inches (7.5 cm), each.

TIP:
Running out of the weaving wire in the middle of a project can be
frustrating, but there is a quite easy solution to add more weaving wire.
Always make sure that you cut off the short weaving wire end behind the
base wires, hiding the end of it. Press the weaving wire end with the tip of
the chain nose pliers, to close it completely. Then, cut another weaving
wire (the length you think you require to finish your project). Position the
initial end of it close to the previous weaving wire we recently closed
behind the base wires, then continue to weave. After a few rotations of
your weave, press the initial end of the weaving wire with the tip of the
chain nose pliers, to close this one as well behind the base wires.

TIP:
If you live in a place with high humidity, you might want to keep your
copper wires safe from a quick oxidation. I recommend you keep
them in a safe box, without letting the humidity in. A short story of my
experience: I used to live close to the sea a few years ago, which
allowed me to create jewelry under an umbrella on the beach. In just
a few hours, my jewelry got very dark from the high humidity of the
air, I did not have to use a patina to make it look antiqued, I just had
to polish it. We do not want to get a whole reel of wire dark in a short
time, instead we can keep it in a box, safe from the humidity.

TIP:
For wire wrapped jewelry I recommend you use natural crystals
and stones. In the market you will find a lot of synthetic and
colored stones and beads, which are not recommended for wire
jewelry. Imagine creating a beautiful piece which you adore, then
after a brief time you see your stone / bead losing its color. When
you shop for stones and beads, always double check if the seller
has a good reputation and if it is written that the goods are natural.

TIP:
If you love the look of the fresh bare copper wire, I recommend you
shop for enameled or coated copper wire, which will not oxidize
ever. In the market you will find coated copper wire in assorted
colors, or in natural copper color. There is also silver-plated copper
wire, or silver filled copper wire, which allows you to make beautiful
silver jewelry, with materials less expensive than pure silver.

This wonderful and unique pendant tutorial is a great combination to show you how different
techniques can complement each other in the same jewelry design.
Tools needed: chain (or flat nose) pliers, wire flush cutter, bail making (or round nose) pliers, ruler,
taper (optional).
Stone: teardrop shaped cabochon between 30-35 mm tall (my stone is 35 mm tall)
Wires: -Simple Celtic Knot with 6 wires –> 26ga (0.4 mm) wire: 6x 16 inches (40 cm)
- Base wire –> 18 ga (1 mm) wire: 1x 16 inches (40 cm)
- Weaving wire –> 26 ga (0.4 mm) wire: 1x 60 inches (150 cm)
1. First, we must measure the length of our stone circumference. Position the initial end of any wire
near the top of the stone on the left side, then bend the wire tightly all around the stone circumference.
At the point where the wire meets with the top of the stone on the right side, cut off the extra wire.

What began as a genuine hobby in 2016, is now a top jewelry making lessons
platform, known all around the world, with thousands of artists joining to learn
how to create unique wire wrapped jewelry designs. The shop on Etsy called
WireArtTutorials has become one of the best-selling online shops, offering

Erika is a self-taught artist who began to experience wire wrap art in 2016
while she was traveling around Europe with her family. She began to create
decorations and wire masks, but her interest was quickly complemented by the
creation of jewelry of all kinds. She likes all styles, from art deco to classic,
from the simplest to the most extravagant. Her most favorite creations are the
wire wrapped animal jewelry, like the elephant, owl, dragon, seahorse, dolphin,
turtle and many more.
She loves to experiment new techniques of all styles, which have not been seen
in wire wrap art before, then teaching them with enthusiasm to her students.
She lives off-grid with her family, in the middle of a forest, getting artistic
inspiration from nature. Erika hopes to write more books soon, teaching more
elaborated techniques within multiple intermediate and advanced tutorials.
