The novel, by the heroine of the story, Jean-Louis Finch

(Scout), narrates events that took place during three years
from 1933 to 1935, in the fictional town of Maycomb in the
state of Alabama in the United States of America.  The
protagonist, Scout, lives with her older brother, James, and
her widowed father, Atticus.  She and her brother befriend a
boy named Del Harris, a boy who comes to their town every
summer to stay with his Aunt Rachel.  Children grow curious
about their mysterious neighbor Arthur Radley, who has not
been seen for many years, and many rumors spread about him
and his mysterious life, while children feed their imaginations
with stories and rumors of an unreliable source.  The children
begin their attempts to find ways to get Beau out of his house
and after a while they are confronted with a group of small
gifts that appear to them in a tree at the Radley family's house,
and they think it is from Beau, but to their great
disappointment, Poe never appears to them.

In court, African-American Tom Robinson is accused of rape

by a white girl named Mayla who is the daughter of town
drunk Bob.  Racism towards blacks, lawyers refuse to defend
Tom because of his skin color, forcing Judge Taylor to appoint
Atticus, father of Scout and James, as Tom's lawyer.

The judge's decision exposes Atticus to a lot of problems with

his community rejecting his defense of a dark-skinned
Ruddell, but Atticus' principles prevent him from rejecting the
case, so he defends Tom, during the court Atticus presents
evidence that proves that Maya was not raped by Tom and
Atticus presents the possibility that Myla is from her unit.  She
tried to seduce Tom, but she failed, and coincidentally with
her failure, her father saw her from the window, and he
punched her with his left side, contrary to Mayla's claim that
Tom punched her.  Atticus' statements are only true when it is
revealed that Tom's left hand is paralyzed, making his punch
to Mella impossible.

Despite the abundance of evidence available, the court finds

Tom guilty, but the evidence presented by Atticus causes the
town to stop dealing with Bob and his family and crush their
reputation, leaving Bob's heart full of grudges against Finch.

Bob takes advantage of the opportunity of the Halloween

school show and tries to kill James and Scout while they
return home, but Scout's heavy costume protects her while
James breaks his arm during the confrontation, a stranger
comes to their rescue and Bob falls to the ground with his
injuries during the confrontation.

When the strange man carries James home, Scout discovers

that it is Boo Radley, and the policeman writes in the
investigation report that Bob caused his death as he fell on his
own knife, which led to him losing blood and killing him, while
Scout escorts Boo to the door, saying goodbye and thinking
about life through his point of view .
