QUATUOR

INTRODUCTION

■ Principle :

■ The function of the Quatuor is to provide the percentage of good

grain, impurities and broken grain from a given sample.

■ The test cycle starts with a debearding (optional module), and the
sample weighing (scale B1).

■ The apparatus proceeds then to the elimination of lightest parti-

cles (dust).

■ The rest of the sample falls then into cylindrical sieves and is
sorted into 3 categories:

❏ broken grain,

❏ good grain,

❏ big impurities.

■ Good grain and broken grain are weighed separately by scales

B2 and B3 respectiveley.

5. IElectric connection The QUATUOR is an electronic apparatus which must be connected

to an electrical network equipped with an Earth terminal. Above all,
verify the condition of this connection.

In addition, the electrical network must be equipped with an RDD

(Residual Differential Device) of the AC grade with a sensitivity
 30 mA.

For the connection to the network, use the power cord provided with
the QUATUOR.

The mains plug and the I/O switch are located at back of the appa-
ratus.

6. Powering up the unit ■ Turn the On/Off switch to ON. The QUATUOR runs a self-test
sequence, checking most of its functions (memories, INIT parame-
ters, motors, scales, etc.); during this sequence, which lasts 1 min
approx., all commands (by means of the touch screen or a key-
board) are inactive.

■ During this self-test sequence are displayed:

"Creating or modifying a calibration", page 57.

■ From the start screen, the user can select the grain to be tested
by using arrows and .

Verify that the sieves are adapted to the grain being tested ("Choos-
ing the sieves", page 51).

■ By using the container supplied with the apparatus, pour 1 litre of

grain into the inlet hopper.

Note The use of this 1-litre container is recommended. However, a

excess conduit, integral with the unit, prevents the machine from
being congested.

Do not put the hand in the weighing hopper.

Take a special care not to drop any object inside the Quatuor (the
unit would be damaged).

■ To start a test cycle press icon . The arrows start then to

rotate.

■ The cycle (see schematic on page 9) starts with the weighing of

the sample.
Then the hopper progressively empties out: the lightest particles
(impurities, beard) are cleaned out by the air flow, while the rest of
the sample falls into the screw.
The particles are then sorted by the sieves and weighed in two
categories:

❏ the small or broken grains,

❏ the good grain.

Section 3. Operation and configuration

1. Principle The aim of the QUATUOR is to determine the percentages of good

grain and impurities of a given sample (1 to 1.2 litre).

■ The cycle starts as soon as the icon TEST of the touch screen is
selected.

■ The cycle begins with the weighing of the sample (scale B1).

■ The sample fall then in the hopper B1 where it is weighed, then

flows out regularly: an air flow extracts then the lightest impurities
(blower power is adjustable).

QUATUOR

■ Grains fall then on a worm screw which drive them to the cylindri-
cal sieves:

❏ broken grain and small impurities go through the first sieve’s ori-
fices,

❏ good grain go through the second sieve’s orifices,

❏ big impurities that did not go through any of the sieves exit at the
extremity of the drum.

■ Good grain and broken grain are collected into two hoppers in
which they are weighed respectively by scales B2 and B3.
They are then dropped into drawer compartments.

B3 B2

■ The QUATUOR proceeds with the calculation of percentages of

impurities or good grain, according to parameters configuration, and
print them out automatically if a printer is connected.

Note The duration of the complete cycle (with debearding) is approxi-

mately 1min. 30sec.

❏ select "Untitled" from within the maintenance menu,

➞ ❏ clear this name with the backspace key of the keyboard,

❏ enter the new calibration name by means of the keyboard then

save it ("Editing the grain name", page 42).

■ Choosing the sieves:

The punching size of the QUATUOR sieves are either:

❏ the one used in flat sieves, or

❏ more generally the latter increased of a few 1/10th of mm, or

❏ special (sieves "Spe").

Note The procedure is the same for modifying an existing calibration:

simply select its name in place of "Untitled".

■ Defining the optimum parameter’s values:

Always use the same sample volume (1 to 1.2 litre max.).

Note When you have no idea on the adjustments, select first a blowing
power of 75% and a sieve’s speed of 60%.

❏ Adjustment of the sieve’s speed

Keep in mind the following rule:

• with long holes, the separation is better with a high speed

(>60%)

• with round holes, the separation is better with a lower speed

(<60%)

❏ Adjustment of the blower power

This adjustment will be optimized by proceeding with detailed

inspection of collected impurities.

If at the end of these training cycles, the sorting quality of broken/

small grains is not satisfactory, select the sieve with larger punching
size, and carry out again all adjustments, starting from sieves speed
defined with previous sieves.

■ Recommended adjustments:

Section 5. Maintenance

1. Periodic ■ The quality of the analyses performed by the QUATUOR is highly

maintenance dependent on the quality of the sieves assembly. It is therefore re-
commended to store, handle and transport the corresponding con-
stitutive parts with great care.

■ The QUATUOR does not require particular preventive mainte-

nance: a self-test is ran at each power-up of the unit. However re-
commendations hereunder shall be taken into account:

❏ Listen to any possibly abnormal noise and proceed as necessary

to manual simulations from the maintenance menu ("Activating ele-
ments of the QUATUOR", page 48).

❏ At least once a month proceed with a cleaning of the QUATUOR:

worm screw, sieves, drawers, hoppers, touch screen, casing, etc.

❏ Regularly, make sure the sieve holes are not obstructed. In case
the holes are clogged with grains, please clean the sieve.

Unplug the electrical supply when supplying is not required.

Note 1. The external surfaces of the QUATUOR are cleaned using a

damp cloth.

Never use a solvent

2. It is recommended to blow out from time to time light impurities

remaining into the QUATUOR, and make them fall into the
receptacle at bottom of the unit. Make use of low pressure com-
pressed air at inlet hopper level.

Entitled repair shop It is recommended to proceed once a year to an overhaul of the

equipment. This shall be carried out by a Chopin Technologies enti-
tled repair organization.

QUATUOR

2. Problem solving ■ In any failure case, before any intervention, restart the apparatus
in order to re-confirm the failure.

Never try to remove the QUATUR casings.

■ If the screen does not light up, check the fuse ("Changing fuses",
page 65).

■ If the touch screen does not work properly, try to re-calibrate the
screen ("Calibrating the screen", page 66).

■ If the printing is not operative, depending on case:

❏ if the printer power-on light remains off, check power supply con-
nections,

❏ check the connection with the QUATUOR, paper installation and

printer heads.

■ Abnormal results:

A cycle test may give abnormal results in some cases, among

which:

■ wrong sieves selected,

■ bad adjustment of the scales, or sensor damage,

■ too small sample (make use of the 1-litre container).
