I can single out for myself the following 5 main points from the article.

 The selfish reaction to the alert was upheld as more proof of dwindling
societal empathy, of “me-first” narcissism, of the further tattering of the
social contract that citizens share.

From this statement, I can draw the following conclusion for myself, that
the selfish reaction destroys social relations between people and affects
the reaction of empathy.

 Austerity programs, including those in Ontario, are targeting the

vulnerable—the poor, children, those on the margins.

I am amazed by this situation, because people who are in a difficult

situation suffer first of all.

 When people are hurt and damaged, that has a huge impact on how
they interact.

This statement fully describes the true realities of life. No person will
tolerate and be kind to someone who harms him.

 When you grow up in an environment like that, you quickly see the good
and bad in people.

The environment in which a person grows affects his entire life. If

people are taught to distinguish between good and evil from an early
age, it is easier for them to navigate in society.

 Within the compassion sector, a line is being drawn between the utility
of empathy, which is feeling and understanding another’s emotions, and
compassion, which involves action.

The ability to share the emotions of different people and empathize is an

important characteristic for a caring person. Unfortunately, nowadays
fewer and fewer people have this ability.
