Thus one can say that this symposium was aimed at scholars of conservation and restoration as well as profession als familiar with the preservation and care of modern and contemporary art. The papers written by well-known experts in this field offer conservator-restorers direct insight into the state of the art and other far-reaching considerations and it is hoped that this will encourage them to become actively involved. Lectures and discussions during this symposium were hheld in English in order for everyone to understand each other. This book, therefore, is also published in English with the support of an English publisher “The Faculty Preservation of Cultural Heritage has focused fn internationalisation in particular for many years, Inter national networks between universities enhance the quality of teaching and research and promote career opportunities for students. There are already more than 20 very active cooperation agreements with international universities that offer study programmes in conservation-restoration and the preservation of monuments and historic buildings. Other ‘cooperative ventures inside and outside Europe are currently being planned. Many students at the faculty take advantage of the opportunity to study one semester abroad and exchange students from all over the world come to us in Hildesheim to gain greater insight into the topics of conservation and restoration. This exchange also works very well among the teaching staff as this international symposium clearly dem- ‘onstrated ~ with the participation of many professors from ‘our partner universities. I sincerely hope thatthe Faculty Preservation of Cultural Heritage will continue to maintain and cultivate its interna tional contacts in the spirit of the Bologna Process as con-
