AB - Mutation is the origin of all genetic variation, good and bad. The mutation
process can evolve in response to mutations, positive or negative selection,
and
genetic drift, but how these forces contribute to mutation-rate variation is
an
unsolved problem at the heart of genetics research. Mutations can be
challenging
to measure, but genome sequencing and other tools have allowed for the
collection
of larger and more detailed datasets, particularly in the yeast-model system.
We
review key hypotheses for the evolution of mutation rates and describe recent
advances in understanding variation in mutational properties within and among
yeast species. The multidimensional spectrum of mutations is increasingly
recognized as holding valuable clues about how this important process
evolves.

AB - The debate over the role of stochasticity is central in evolutionary biology,
often summarised by whether or not evolution is predictable or repeatable.
Here
we distinguish three types of stochasticity: stochasticity of mutation and
variation, of individual life histories and of environmental change. We then
explain when stochasticity matters in evolution, distinguishing four broad
situations: stochasticity contributes to maladaptation or limits adaptation;
it
drives evolution on flat fitness landscapes (evolutionary freedom); it might
promote jumps from one fitness peak to another (evolutionary revolutions);
and it
might shape the selection pressures themselves. We show that stochasticity,
by
directly steering evolution, has become an essential ingredient of
evolutionary
theory beyond the classical Wright-Fisher or neutralist-selectionist debates.

AB - Plant (archaeplastid) evolution has transformed the biosphere, but we are
only
now beginning to learn how this took place through comparative genomics,
phylogenetics, and the fossil record. This has illuminated the phylogeny of
Archaeplastida, Viridiplantae, and Streptophyta, and has resolved the
evolution
of key characters, genes, and genomes - revealing that many key innovations
evolved long before the clades with which they have been casually associated.
Molecular clock analyses estimate that Streptophyta and Viridiplantae emerged
in
the late Mesoproterozoic to late Neoproterozoic, whereas Archaeplastida
emerged
in the late-mid Palaeoproterozoic. Together, these insights inform on the
coevolution of plants and the Earth system that transformed ecology and
global
biogeochemical cycles, increased weathering, and precipitated snowball Earth
events, during which they would have been key to oxygen production and net
primary productivity (NPP).
