Liquid Spectrum
BP MCP 18.06 aligns with Liquid Spectrum Release 1.2.

Liquid Spectrum enables customers to extract the maximum value from their infrastructure investment.
Liquid Spectrum applications are enabled with the MCP Plus license. The functionality is integrated within
the MCP user interface and APIs.

• Performance Meter application:

◦ Channel Margin Gauge – provides actual SNR margin per channel, using real-time network data

◦ Planning Tool Calibrator – provides actual fiber span loss and plan reconciliation, using real-time
network data
• Wave-Line Synchronizer application – synchronizes the settings of the transponders with the photonic
lines to which they are connected, reducing manual provisioning steps
• Bandwidth Optimizer application – Given the total capacity requirement from point A to Z, Bandwidth
Optimizer provides the optimum configuration and channel placement based on customer-defined
margin policies. This simplifies and accelerates service turn-up, so that operators can quickly respond
to new service demands using existing network resources

Release Notes for Blue Planet MCP Release

18.06
The following release limitations are known issues in Blue Planet Manage, Control and Plan (MCP)
Release 18.06.

This chapter includes the following sections:

• Blue Planet MCP Release 18.06 Release Notes (known feature implementation limitations)
• Blue Planet MCP Release 18.06 Release Notes (new items)
• Liquid Spectrum 1.2 Release Notes (new items)
• Blue Planet MCP Release 18.06 Release Notes (release notes items from previous releases)

Blue Planet MCP Release 18.06 Release Notes (known

feature implementation limitations)
Blue Planet MCP Release 18.06 includes the following limitations.

Deployment Configurations
Due to a software limitation, MCP Release 18.06 should not be deployed in a single-host configuration on
a VM or bare metal server with 32GB RAM. Doing so may have a detrimental effect on the stability of the
system after a few days of operation. This limitation will be addressed in an upcoming patch for MCP
18.06. This software limitation does not apply to a multi-host configuration, or to any configuration where
the server(s) are equipped with at least 64GB RAM.

Offline Planning

MCP Export
• MR-SNCs are excluded from the export (note that DTLs are exported)
• Incomplete Export of Planned/Committed (non-discovered) Fiber Routes (that is, planned over
planned scenario) control plane info, including OSRP links/lines and Control Plane mode, not included
for Planned/Committed projects differential provisioning data not included for Planned/Committed
projects
• Networks with duplicate site ids not supported (various issues in OnePlanner)
• Some P-SNCs do not retain path and/or spectral assignment upon export (that is, status is Placed
instead of Assigned when imported into OnePlanner)
• Export performed while long-running updates to NSI (for example, NE “synch”, service provisioning,

Standard Issue 08.01 ©2018 Ciena Corporation. All rights reserved. September 2018 | Page 18
Blue Planet MCP Release Notes, Release 18.06 Release Notes for Blue Planet MCP Release 18.06

project commit/cancel) are taking place may result incomplete or “corrupt” exports, do not do exports
when doing things like network sync

Running FTV/ALE on MCP Exported networks in OnePlanner

• All DWDM interface adjacencies are assumed to be provisioned with default system settings and
calculates viability based on those default settings. There is currently no way to confirm if default
values are actually used.
• No support for OSC pad detection for MLAx amps
• It is assumed that all mod class biases are set to default values
• Fiber losses measured and calculated by MCP:
◦ Calculated based on the delta in powers measured at either end of the fiber.
◦ OSCSPANLOSS is not used, so there has to be at least one wavelength on each fiber
• It is the responsibility of the user to check the measured vs planned values of fiber loss to ensure the
resulting link budget is acceptable.
• FTV is not blocked from running when there is missing fiber data (currently results in errors)
• FTV crashes when CCMD8x16 is missing at intermediate nodes when “UDP/DTL” option is selected in
Path Options
• WLAi card support: only be available in power mode in 5.0.5 release.

MCP Import and Commit

• MCP does not screen the imported network to check that it is “supported” by the current version of
MCP (eg: no formal filtering of Fixed-grid designs coming from OnePlanner in 17.06). MCP behaviour
is undefined for unsupported equipment.
• No checking of modified imported network to ensure that modifications are supported in workflow.
Currently only equipment additions are supported. Equipment removal or edits are not supported.
MCP behaviour is undefined for removals or edits.
• Services created during the OnePlanner session will not be included in the MCP import in 17.06
• Services cannot be planned via MCP over any new photonic equipment from a new fiber route planned
in the OnePlanner offline planning workflow.

HA / Restarts

Overview
For the scenario of solution restart or concurrent reboot of the 3 hosts in a 2+1 MCP cluster you may
intermittently (30% frequency) see ~1% - 10% of Network Elements continuously reported in an endless
"Syncing" state. Reset/resync of these nodes to clear’.

Service Management

Service Discovery & Visualization

• Visualization of MR-SNC always shows the current (active) path. If the SNC has been restored multiple
times, there is no indication on the UI of its home path or previously restored paths. The user will need
to view the OTU4 or OTUCn/ODUCn to find the active path.

Service Provisioning
• Limitations on creating line services on WL3 and WLAi transponders cards connected to the same
CMD:
a. The first service on the first transponder (that is, WL3 or WLAi) should be created successfully. It is
recommended to provision the WL3 service before provisioning the WLAi service on the same CMD
if the user will be expanding the SNCG in future services.
b. When creating the first service on a second transponder (that is, WL3 or WLAi), the user should
enter a frequency and specify a new SNCG.
c. When creating additional services on either transponder, the user should either:
1. Select the SNCG already created for the previous service on the same CMD with similar
Transponders and do not specify the frequency or
2. Enter a new frequency and enter a new SNCG.
• When reusing an exisitng SNCG for an WLAi line service, the user must select AutoAssign for the
frequency otherwise the Get Path will fail if the frequency is manually specified. Alternatively, the user
can auto assign or create a new SNCG and manually specify the frequency.
• Expansion of SNCG brownfield (discovered SNCG) is not supported. If the user selects a discovered
SNCG in the drop down during service provisioning, they will see an error message “User specified
bundle name, <SNCG>, cannot be found in the Network”. The error message is misleading. The SNCG
should be filtered from the drop-down list.
• For services that have multiple possible backup paths the find routes function during service
provisioning will time out (after appox 15 minutes) and the provisioning operation will fail. Workaround
- Enter at least one routing constraint for backup path routing as part of a protected L0 provisioning
operation.
• When provisioning CMD to CMD service, the user must select CMD ports from either Rx to Tx or Tx to
Rx.
