HYBRID LEARNING? WHY NOT.

Pandesha F.L., Raharjo M., & Mirizon S. (2023). A need analysis of English hybrid learning
using Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) through Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model to
primary school students. English Review: Journal of English Education, 11(1), 123- 132. Print

The article, “A need analysis of English hybrid learning using Open Broadcaster
Software (OBS) through Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model to primary school students”, by
Pandesha F.L., Raharjo M., & Mirizon S. (2023) conducted a study on 37 respondents consist
of 12 teachers and 25 students about how to overcome students’ problems during their
learning process, and resulted that hybrid learning is one of the solutions to overcome those
problems.

When using hybrid learning, it will involve two types of learning process; offline or
face to face learning and online learning. The used of this type of learning demands
teacher’s creativity and knowledge on conducting the learning process using technology to
give good result for students (Vivian Anak Undi, Harwati Hashim, 2021). So, the choice of the
software also must be well considered in order to avoid the following problems occur on the
learning process. The researchers chose OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) to support the
hybrid learning that believed it can record the learning process and broadcast live. Another
choice that researchers chose to support the hybrid learning is Project Based Learning. The
researchers chose this mode in accordance with the objective of Merdeka curriculum.

The method used by the researchers are ASSURE Model and Tesmer Evaluation. This
model can be implemented in every level of educations and skills and also one of solution to
overcome the possible problems happen during the teaching learning process because it is
well organized with the six stages (Prihatmi , Istiqoma , Anjarwati, 2021). This method used
to find out the teachers’ and students’ understanding and their needs for the development
of hybrid learning using open based software through project-based learning. To collect the
data, the researchers used questionnaire and analyse using descriptive statistics.

Based on the data analysis conducted by the researchers above, the need of hybrid
learning based on teachers’ perspective is extremely needed. Operating new technology and
media on dealing with the problems occur at learning process also must be provided
because lots of teachers still lack of understanding and knowledge of the media and
technology. Based on students’ perspective, this method of learning and the components
follow the method is really needed to be more understand the materials.

So, English hybrid learning using Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) through Project-
Based Learning (PjBL) model is hoped to be conducted in the teaching learning process and
can motivate students in learning English in with the teachers’ knowledge and

understanding to the technology and media. This process will run well with the support of
the authority to facilitate all the components from the tools and trainings.

Critique

The choice of Open Broadcaster Software that was chosen by the researchers was
not compared with the other flatforms available in the internet such as Zoom, Google meet,
skype, Webex, etc. Even they describe the function which can be used in the learning
process to support the hybrid learning, it was not compared to the others from the strengths
and the weaknesses. Like zoom which has the feature Breakout Room that the other flatform
don’t have (Mu’awanah, Sumardi, Suparno, 2021). This feature is appropriate when we conduct
group and teacher still can check each group from the main room.

Project-Based Learning is a learning model which was chosen to make the learning process is
interesting and not monotonous (Anggraini, Wulandari, 2021) in accordance with the Merdeka
Curriculum which was chosen as one of the ministry’s efforts to overcome learning crisis post covid
19 pandemic (Nugraha T S, 2022). Unfortunately, the researchers didn’t provide the objective of the
Merdeka Curriculum clearly or in a glance.

Teacher who has great role in teaching learning process as changemaker and empowering
other lives through teaching (Huat CM, Shunmugam K, 2021) must have enough knowledge
conducting the leaning model such as hybrid learning which is new for almost of them because it was
dealing with technology, and learning method. So, the additional training for them is also needed
both in terms of knowledge and practice.
