Commercial Applications

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones were once a technology that was solely

available to governments and military organizations. In 2006, the same year the Federal

Aviation Administration awarded its first commercial drone permit, the first usage of drones

for non-military purposes began. This use was influenced by military research and

development over the preceding 150 years. Today, however, domestic and commercial drone

use is surging. Drone companies expanded by 15% in size in 2020, as per Drone Industry

Insights estimates. During the pandemic, eighteen countries implemented delivery services

and transportation, according to the UNICEF study. Drones were used in Rwanda, Ghana,

and Malawi to carry COVID-19 supplies, ordinary medical consumables, and medical

specimens. It was also employed in aerial spraying to disinfect hazardous areas, as well as

monitoring and controlling them throughout the lockdown (Drone services market size, share

& covid-19 impact analysis, 2021)

Drones have mostly been utilized for surveillance and inspection in the commercial

sector. However, drones are currently employed for a variety of commercial purposes,

including cinematography and photography, environmental mapping, agriculture, and cargo

transportation, conducting search and rescue missions, counting wildlife and monitoring

animal populations, doing land surveys, monitoring forest fires, and inspecting oil pipelines,

power lines, and other distant infrastructure (Drone services market size, share & covid-

19 impact analysis, 2021).

Rising of drones in agriculture

The growing requirement for precision farming to multiply agricultural productivity

promotes drone market expansion. To increase the effectiveness of drones, Original

Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are spending money on research and development to

create thermal cameras, multispectral sensors, and LiDAR. With sensors to produce

analytical data, the drones fly at a predetermined altitude. They are employed in the mapping

of vegetation and field monitoring. Those charts assist in identifying infections, irrigation,

and unusual behavior in the field. Moreover, the capacity of drones to transport heavy

equipment has been used to spray crops in big fields (Drone services market size, share

& covid-19 impact analysis, 2021).
