INTRODUCTION:

The theme for this IA is Communism and the topic under this theme is the Effects of

Communism on Cuba. The purpose of choosing this topic is to explore the effects of communism

in Cuba, both historically and in the present day. This will provide insight into how communism

has shaped Cuban society and culture, its economy and political system.

The portfolio consists of a reflection and a exposition. The reflection is a poem, entitled

"The Escape of An Everyday Man”. It is about a man living under a communist regime. He is

not happy with the way things are and wants to escape. He eventually does and finds a new life

somewhere else. The expository explores the negative effects of communism in Cuba, which has

caused social unrest, fractured relationships with other countries, and mass poverty among

Cuban civilians. Writing these pieces helped to provide insight into how communism has shaped

Cuban society and culture, as well as to outline its impact on the country's economy and political

system.

I chose this topic because I am a Cuban-born child and I want to understand the effects of

communism on my home country. Growing up in Cuba, I have seen firsthand how the

communist system has impacted the lives of my family and friends. This topic has helped me to

develop my organizational and comprehensive skills by allowing me to research the effects of

Communism on Cuba. Additionally, I have been able to develop my ability to analyze data and

draw conclusions from it. This has enabled me to better understand the complexities of the

Cuban economy and in the process improved my writing skills by allowing me to express my

thoughts in a clear and concise manner. My future purpose in life is to use my knowledge and
experience as an Architect to help improve the lives of people living in countries affected by

communism, such as Cuba. I want to work towards creating a more equitable and just society by

advocating for economic and social reforms that will benefit all citizens.
ANALYSIS:

The poem "The Escape of An Everyday Man" tells the tale of a Cuban man living under a

communist regime who yearns to escape and find a new life in another place. The two linguistic

features chosen for this piece are dialectal variation and register.

Furthermore, the first linguistic feature chosen for this piece is dialectal variation. The variations

chosen where creole and standard English. The poet of this poem used Jamaican Patois to create

a sense of authenticity and to capture the Caribbean culture. By using words such as

"gowanment" and "di" instead of "government" and "the", The speaker uses reduced consonant

cluster and palatalization to create a more realistic atmosphere for the poem. The poet also used

Standard English for the more important parts to ensure that the message was clear and

understandable to a wide audience for example "For the effects of communism are near," "Their

lives are filled with constant dread," and "To find a new life far far away." Standard English is

the most widely accepted form of English, and it is used formally, there is the use of good

grammar and sentence structure to appeal to a wide cross section of society.

Additionally, another linguistic feature chosen for this piece is register. This poem uses a

combination of formal and informal language registers. Formal language is used to describe the

oppressive nature of the Cuban government example: "For the effects of communism are near",

while informal language is used to convey the emotions of the people living under its rule for

example: "Di people a Cuba no got no choice". It employs words such as "fear", "prison cell",

and "dread" to create a sense of urgency and fear, while dialectal variation is used to give the

poem a more authentic Caribbean feel.

The two linguistic features present in this piece are the use of dialectal variation and register. The

poet of this poem used a combination of Jamaican Patois and Standard English to highlight the

issues relevant to Cuba’s ideology. The purpose of choosing this topic is to explore the effects of

communism in Cuba, both historically and in the present day. This will provide insight into how

communism has shaped Cuban society and culture, its economy and political system.
PREFACE:

The purpose of this topic is to investigate the impact of communism on Cuba, both in the

past and in the present. The reflection is a poem, the poem "The Escape of An Everyday Man”.

tells the story of a man living in Cuba under a communist regime who desires to break free and

find a new life elsewhere. He eventually succeeds in his escape, leaving behind the oppressive

system he was living under. This poem was written for a public audience and will be performed

at ZIZ on April 15th, 2023, at 8pm with a microphone and sound system. And will be published

in the CFBC College school paper on April 1st, 2022. I chose ZIZ as the venue for this poem

because it is a news outlet that provides accurate and up-to-date information about The

Caribbean and its people. It is also a place where people can come together to discuss their

experiences and share stories. I chose to publish this poem in the CFBC College school paper

because I wanted to reach a younger audience who are naïve about the struggles of living under

an oppressive regime.
