Acknowledgment
Words cannot explain how grateful I am to my lecturer and classmates for their time and
feedback. Most importantly, without God, this portfolio would not have been completed. I also
want to thank my classmates and cohort members for their editing assistance, late-night critiques,
and moral support. Finally, I would be negligent if I did not mention my family, particularly my
parents. Their confidence in me has maintained my spirits and motivation strong throughout the
process.

My Harriet, you inspire me to write.
How I love the way you fight, love and hate,
Invading my mind day and through the night,
Always dreaming about the estate.
Short Story
Title: Slavery
One day, a group of strangers arrived in the village. They were wealthy merchants who
offered to buy some of the villagers' crops and livestock. Tariq's family, along with many others,
eagerly agreed to the offer. But the strangers had a hidden agenda. They took the crops and
animals but left with more than they bargained for - they also took Tariq, along with several
other children and adults, as slaves. Tariq and the others were taken away from their families and
forced to work in the fields of the strangers' estate. They were beaten if they did not work hard
enough and were given little food or water. Tariq missed his family and his old life but knew that
he would never be able to escape. Years went by, and Tariq grew into a strong young man. He
had accepted his life as a slave, but deep down, he longed for his freedom. One day, he
overheard the strangers talking about a shipment of goods that they were sending to a faraway
land. Tariq knew that this was his chance. He snuck into the shipment, hiding amongst the crates
and boxes, and waited until the boat set sail. Once they were far out to sea, Tariq emerged from
his hiding place and fought his way out of the crate. He overpowered the guards and took control
of the ship, freeing the other slaves on board. Tariq sailed the ship to a new land where he and
the other slaves started new lives. They worked hard to build a community, free from the bonds
of slavery. Tariq became a leader, teaching others to fight for their freedom and never give up
hope. Years later, Tariq looked back on his life and was grateful for his newfound freedom. He
knew that he had gone through great suffering, but he also knew that he had gained something
invaluable - the strength to fight for what is right and to never give up on the dream of a better
life.

Title: Slavery Plantation
Slavery has been one of the darkest periods in human history, where millions of people
were forced to work against their will under brutal and inhumane conditions. The plantation
system, in particular, was a major part of the transatlantic slave trade, where slaves were forced
to work on large farms that produced crops like cotton, tobacco, and sugar.
A typical plantation was a large farm that covered hundreds or thousands of acres of land.
The plantation owner or master controlled every aspect of the operation, including the
management of the slaves, the crops grown, and the profits made. The slaves were treated as
property rather than human beings, and their lives were characterized by harsh and degrading
conditions. The slave quarters were typically located away from the main house and were
overcrowded and unsanitary. The slaves were forced to live in small, cramped cabins made of
wood or mud. These cabins lacked ventilation and were often hot and humid, leading to various
health problems.
The slaves' workday began before dawn, and they were forced to work until dusk, often
under the scorching sun. They were given minimal food and clothing, and what they received
was of inferior quality. Their diet typically consisted of cornmeal, bacon, and molasses, and they
had to work for everything they received. The slaves' work was grueling and backbreaking, with
many working in the fields from dawn until dusk. They had to plant and harvest crops, tend to
They were often punished severely for failing to meet production quotas, and these
punishments included whippings, beatings, and being forced to wear iron collars. Slaves were
also subjected to other forms of abuse, including sexual exploitation, and forced separation from
their families. Slave children were often separated from their parents at an early age, and family
members were often sold to different plantations. This resulted in a loss of identity and culture,
In conclusion, the plantation system was a brutal and degrading institution that exploited
and abused millions of people. The lives of the slaves were characterized by harsh conditions,
long hours, and minimal food and clothing. The system perpetuated the myth of racial superiority
and contributed to the marginalization and oppression of black people for generations to come. It
is a dark period in history that should never be forgotten, and we must continue to work towards
creating a society that values and respects the dignity of every human being.

A helpful slave LOUIS MORAIN barges into Harriets’ house looking flustered.
HARRIET
Goodness, Louis! Is everything okay?
LOUIS
I'm afraid not.
HARRIET
What is it? Don't keep me in suspense...
LOUIS
It's ... a Slave master ... I saw an evil Slave master kill a bunch of slaves!
HARRIET
Defenseless slaves?
LOUIS
Yes, defenseless slaves!
HARRIET
Bloomin' heck, Louis! We've got to do something.
LOUIS
I agree, but I wouldn't know where to start.
Creative Writing Portfolio 12
HARRIET
You can start by telling me where this happened.
LOUIS
I was...
(LOUIS fans himself and begins to wheeze.)
HARRIET
Focus Louis, focus! Where did it happen?
LOUIS
House! That's right - House!
HARRIET springs up and begins to run.
HARRIET
You can say that again.
LOUIS
Blinkin' knickers, Harriet! We're going to need some help if we're going to stop the most Violent
Slave master in the universe!
HARRIET
I'm going to need a Guillotine, a large Guillotine.
Toussaint turns and sees Harriet and Louis. He grins an evil grin.
TOUSSAINT
Harriet Tubman, we meet again.
LOUIS
You've met?
HARRIET
Yes. It was a long, long time ago...
HARRIET
You should be.
LOUIS
Are you sure? It does seem like an odd place to keep a Guillotine.
HARRIET
You know nothing Louis Morain.
LOUIS
We've been searching for ages. I really don't think they're here.
Suddenly, TOUSSAINT appears, holding a pair of Guillotine.
TOUSSAINT
Looking for something?
LOUIS
Crikey, Harriet, he's got your Guillotine.
HARRIET
Tell me something I don't already know!
LOUIS
The earth's circumference at the equator is about 40,075 km (about 24901.45 mi).
HARRIET
I know that already!
LOUIS
I actually do not have a problem with the slaves, I am just forced to hate them...
TOUSSAINT
(appalled) Dude!
While TOUSSAINT is looking at LOUIS with disgust, HARRIET lunges forward and grabs her
deadly Guillotine. He wields them, triumphantly.
HARRIET
Prepare to die, you Violent Dog!

TOUSSAINT
No please! All I did was kill a bunch of slaves!
(SAMUEL enters, unseen by any of the others.)
HARRIET
I cannot tolerate that kind of behavior! Those slaves were defenseless! Well now they have a
defender - and that's me! Harriet Tubman defender of innocent slaves.
TOUSSAINT
Don't hurt me! Please!
HARRIET
Give me one good reason why I shouldn't use this Guillotine on you right away!
TOUSSAINT
Because Harriet, I am your father.
HARRIET looks stunned for a few moments, but then collects herself.
HARRIET
No you're not!
TOUSSAINT
Ah well, it had to be worth a try.
TOUSSAINT tries to grab the Guillotine but HARRIET dodges out of the way.
HARRIET
Who's the daddy now? Huh? Huh?
Unexpectedly, TOUSSAINT slumps to the ground.
HARRIET
It appears that... It would seem... Toussaint Louverture is dead!
It appears that I scared him to death.
LOUIS claps his hands.
(SAMUEL steps forward.)
SAMUEL
Is it true? Did you kill the Violent Slave master?
HARRIET
Samuel how long have you been...?
Creative Writing Portfolio 16
HARRIET
It does seem that way!
A crowd of vulnerable slaves enter, looking relieved.
SAMUEL
You are their hero.
The slaves bow to HARRIET.
HARRIET
There is no need to bow to me. I seek no worship. The knowledge that Toussaint Louverture will
never kill slaves ever again, is enough for me.
