ROCKFALL-XTM G Damping System

Gföller Bridge, Val d’Ega / Italy

Location: Val d’Ega, Italy

Quantity /height: 109 elements of H = 1.0 m
99 elements of H = 1.5 m
348 elements of H = 2.0 m
Energy dissipation: 2,300 kJ
Protected area: Roof of Gföller bridge
Stabilization system: Damping system ROCKFALL-X TM G comprising:
• TECCO® G65/3 high-resistance steel
mesh, used for containing the cylindrical bags
and as a horizontal covering/top layer
• Foam glass
• Plastic bags of height 2.0, 1.5 and 1.0 m,
Year of installation: May/June 2014

Installation of central damping modules The intervention concerns safety work on the Gföller bridge, at km 1,270
(bags) of various heights (1.0 m, 1.5 m,
2.0 m). of the main road (strada statale 241) to Val d’Ega, near the village of
Cornedo; the gallery between two stretches of tunnel is exposed to the
risk of rockfall, and in particularly severe events there is a risk of damage
to the concrete deck. To reduce this risk, the gallery was designed to
incorporate a protection system which works by absorbing kinetic energy,
thereby limiting deformation and above all limiting the pressure exerted
on the deck by spreading loads over a wide area, while limiting the weight
on the gallery so as not to overburden it.

The system, although specially configured for the case under examination,
is not in itself new and has previously been deployed by Geobrugg AG.

To evaluate the structural integrity of the installation, our engineers

visited the site several times, inspecting every aspect of the system and
concluding that it had been installed correctly and in compliance with the
design specifications. In this instance, the bags were filled in the factory,
and therefore with a margin of error approaching zero. Special attention
was paid to the way in which the bags had been packed together, their
interconnection and the filling of the cavities created by the bunching of
the cylindrical bags.

It is the task of our engineers and partners to analyze the problem

together with you in detail and then, together with local consul-
tants, to present solutions. Painstaking planning is not the only thing
you can expect from us, however; since we have our own production
plants on four continents, we can offer not only short delivery paths
and times, but also optimal local customer service. With a view
towards a trouble-free execution, we deliver preassembled and clearly
identified system components right to the construction site. There
we provide support, if desired, including technical support – from
installation right on up until acceptance of the structure.
