1.0 Introduction

This statement is to describe the activities and method which will be used to carry out the
installation of geotextile and geotubes for river embankment and to outline the resources
needed for these operations.

GEOFABRIC TUBE INSTALLATION

Preparation
Survey team will prepare and peg the alignment and location for the geofabric tube installation
prior to any geofabric tube installation work. The site area is to be leveled and cleared of
stones, wood, plant, vegetation or other sharp objects to prevent damage or rupture to the
geofabric tube. A layer of geotextile will be laid before the installation of the geofabric tube.
The Installation Procedure For Geotubes

The geofabric tube is tied to iron guide tubes used to guide and make sure the alignment for
the geofabric tube is correct. A flexible pipe is connected to the inlet port of the geofabric tube.
The pipes are connected to a sand pump. Sand slurry is then pumped into the geofabric tube
until the required height. The flexible pipes will be shifted to different part to ensure geofabric
tube is fully filled with in-filling of slurry, mud, sand and other small waste products.

Finishing
To prevent damage due to scour geofabric tube from waves from the sear or waves from the
river, punctured by sharp objects or act of vandalism, the surface of the geofabric tube can be
covered with a concrete matrass if needed.

2.0 Work Sequence Flow

2.1 Site Preparation

An open area on land of approximately 500m length x 500m is leveled and prepared for
storage and deployment of the stitched non-woven geotextile. The area should be firm
and stable to accommodate excavators, cleared of large stones, exposed tree root stems
or other protrusions which can damage the non-woven geotextile and geotubes.

2.2 Setting Out

The alignment of the non-woven geotextile and geotube will be clearly identified and marked
using steel tubes at 25m interval. The steel tubes are planted into the seabed with sufficient
protrusion above water level.

Approximate
width of works

2.3 Deployment of non-woven geotextile (For Artificial Island and Beach Area works if applicable)

The stitched non-woven geotexile is unrolled and positioned flat on the ground with one end
close to the sea. This end is tie to a boat for towing out to the installation location. The non-
woven geotextile will float and maneuvered between the iron tubes.
Non-woven geotextile

Upon reaching the required location, the non-woven geotextile is tied at the 4 corners to
iron tubes and slowly weight down by sandbags or other suitable means.

2.4 Deployment of Geotube to form bottom tier ( applicable for breakwater, man made island
and beach area) – Note: For Man Made Island, No nonwoven Geotextile, Polyfelt TS009
is install under the Geotube but install over and in between the Geotube bund.

The geotubes are unwrapped and rolled flat on the ground with one end positioned close to
the sea to enable towing rope to be tied to a boat for deployment.

2.5 Filling of bottom tier geotube

Flexible pipes are inserted into the inlet port of the geotube. The pipes are connected to
pumping stations located on land or on float. Sand slurry is then pumped into the geotube
until the required height. The flexible pipes will be shifted to different port to ensure geotube
is fully filled with sand.

For Artificial Island these additional steps are required - The same process is
repeated for 2nd geotube to be placed beside first geotube to form the bottom tier of
perimeter bund.
Except that No Nonwoven Geotextile, Polyfelt TS009 was placed underneath the
geotube but to installed over and in between the Geotube bunds.
After completion of bottom tier geotube # 1 and geotube # 2, the geotube # 3 is deployed
into position beside geotube # 2 and filled.

2.6 Deployment and filling of top tier single geotube

After installing the 3 nos bottom tier geotubes over the geotube mattress, the deployment
and filling of top tier single geotube will be carried out in the same m a n n e r .
3.0 Material

• TenCate GT750M
• Non-Woven Geotextile Wolfelt TS009 or approved equivalent

4.0 Equipment/ Tools

• Sand slurry pumps (Excavator Amphibious Sand Pump Dredger) – 01 unit

• Excavators – 02 units
• Pipes and pumps access – Depends on distance from pump to geotubes
5.0 Man Power

The following labour resources shall be deployed to the site for the installation of geotubes

• Site supervisors 01 pax

• Pump operator 02 pax
• General worker 15 pax
• Excavator operators 02 pax
• Boatman 02 pax

6.0 Safety & Environment

Will work closely with client to ensure safe working condition and environment to carry
out the works.
The following key areas of construction shall be adhered by all site personal working on site.

▪ Personnel Protective Equipment

The personnel protective equipment (PPE) which will be provided to the workers
onsite includes the following: -
- Safety helmets
- Safety boots
- Life vest for working over water.

▪ House keeping

Housekeeping is an essential part of safety for the daily routine. Housekeeping

would include the following items: -
- Maintain access / egress to all working area.
- Store and stack all construction materials in safe and orderly manner.
- Avoid littering around the jobsite.

▪ Environment Issues

Temporary drains / sediment pond / silt fence will be constructed and maintained
throughout construction periods to ensure compliance to regulations.

In summation, in order to achieve safe, free risk and healthy working environment that
including loss prevention, every practicable step must be taken by each and every one
engaged in this project site.

GeoTube
(Geotextile Tube)
Description:

GeoTubes are tubular containment systems made of specialized geosynthetics which prevent
soil and sand from being eroded by waves and currents.
It is a geotextile material filled with soil or sand and it is sewn so that it forms cushions which
are used to replace conventional rocks formation and beach protection.
It is more stable hydraulically and geotechnically because this bag is heavier and wider with
proportion high ratio. It performs well because it is built with integrated units.
Typically, GeoTube are hydraulically filled with a slurry of sand and water but the tubes can
also be filled by a combined mechanical or hydraulic method.

Strengths:

• Strong and Durable.

• Effective Retaining Wall.
• Deaden sea waves
• Practical and Easy Installation
• Material from Sand Around
Applications:

• Protection for Beach Abrasion

• Breakwater
• Containment Dikes for Dredge Materials
• Wetland Construction
