1.0 SCOPE

This method statement specifically describe the procedure involved in

installation, monitoring and maintenance of geotechnical instrumentation at
to ensure that the works is completed in accordance with the specification
and applicable Standard codes of Practice and that the activities are
documented.

The scope of work shall include :

a) Confirmation by SE on the proposed geotechnical instrumentation and

quantity area based on the construction drawings.

b) Installation of all necessary geotechnical instrumentation for monitoring

purpose as specified in the Drawings.

c) Obtaining the relevant approval from local authorities, if required.

d) Installation of all necessary local traffic management, if required.

2.0 MATERIALS

a) Not applicable.

3.0 EQUIPMENT & RESOURCES

3.1 Machinery / Equipment

The basic equipment to be used is as follows :

a) A base of 500 mm X 500 mm X 12.5 mm thick MS plate

b) A 60 mm diameter galvanised steel pile of 1.2 m length, welded and

secured firmly to the base plate. Coupling used where applicable to
enable extension to be made.

c) A 100 mm diameter Class “O” PVC pipe which will act as a sleeve over the
steel pipe to prevent contact between the steel pipe and the file surcharge
and to ensure freedom of movement of the steel pipe when displacement
of the base plate occurs.

d) Dumpy Level

e) Detail of instrumentation shall follow drawing no WD/RI/BI/C-GT/6386.

3.2 Manpower

Manpower involved :

a) 1 Supervisor

b) 1 Surveyor

c) 2 Chainman

4.0 METHOD

4.1 Installation

4.1.1 During the installation period, a short section, typically 1.00m to 1.5m of the
steel pipe welded and secured to the steel base plate.

4.1.2 Once completed, these so called ‘primary’ sections or elements are placed in
specially prepared compacted granular platform, arranged according to the
layout of location of settlement.

4.1.3 The above procedure is to facilitate the placement and construction of the
required 1.0 m thick sand blankets.

4.1.4 Once the sand blankets has been put in place, the stage loading in the form
of increment surcharging according the Engineer’s design load required will
begin.

4.1.5 Prior to procedure above however, the extension of steel pipe has to be
carried out by means of coupling the joints. The steel pipes are extended to
the required height to enable future monitoring to perform.

Correspondingly, the 100mm diameter PVC pipe will be placed over the steel
pipe along its entire length within the fill surcharge during this period of
reasons as outlined in paragraph 4.1.1 above.

4.2 Monitoring

4.2.1 Once installed, these markers will be monitored using a Dumpy

Level.

4.2.2 A suitable location will be identified to station the survey

instrument. The chosen location would have to have an unobstructed line of
sight to the targets (settlement plated/markers and be reasonably distant
from the influence of settlement or ground deformation brought about the
consolidation of the clay soil beneath the fill surcharge.

4.2.3 A temporary benchmark (TBM) would be sited close to the area

of the project site during monitoring to provide reference record for the
settlement plates/markers readings.

4.2.4 The monitoring of settlement plate shall be done until the

subgrade level of embankment fill or as directed by SE.

4.2.5 On each occasion that readings are taken from an instrument or

set of instruments, measured values shall be recorded on a record sheet.
Details of information and values to be stored on each record sheet in
addition to the general information required are given below :

a) Reduced level of top of gauge (mRL)

b) Original ground level at gauge location (mRL)
c) Reduce level of ground adjacent to gauge (mRL)
d) Record of fill placed (m)
e) Total thickness of fill (m)
f) Record of extensions (m)
g) Settlement of plate relative to base readings and previous reading (mm)

4.2.6 Frequency of monitoring of instrument shall be as below :

Frequency of Monitoring
Type
Construction Period Defect Liability Period
1. Settlement 1. Immediately before and right Once a month (if required
plate after each layer of fill then to be monitored)
everyday during filling works.
2. Thereafter, trice weekly for
two weeks.
3. Followed twice weekly for
next two weeks
4. Thereafter, once a week until
end of construction or until as
instructed by the SE.

4.2.7 Each weekly report shall include complete information about the work not
limited to the following :

a) A description of monitoring works which have been in operation during

the preceding week.
b) Information on reading anomalies or corrections, and factors which may
influence measured data.
c) Observations or remarks.
d) Diagram showing installed location of instrument (taken from installation
report).
e) Data tabulations or plots of thickness of fill and settlement of gauge plate
vs. time.

4.2.8 The format for the monthly report is the same as the weekly report except
that the required details reported are for a month instead of a week.

4.2.9 Coordination with earthwork and instrumentation monitoring based on the

graph of cumulative settlement vs thickness of fill above settlement plate.

4.3 Procedure

4.3.1 Setting up level equipment.

4.3.2 Take the reduce level (RL) from TBM by using levelling staff (record
down).

4.3.3 Take the settlement point reduce level (RL) by placing the levelling staff
on the settlement point.

4.3.4 By shooting the precise level equipment to levelling staff, adjust the focus
knob until the center cross hair coincides with the staff reading. The height
of the staff is hence recorded. Then the reduced level (RL) of the settlement
point can be calculated as follows :

RL of settlement point = TBM + Height of Staff –Height of stall on settlement

Point.

4.3.5 By comparing the initial reading with subsequent reading, the settlement
at individual location can be calculated.

4.3.6 A graph of Settlement Vs Time will be presented in the report through out
the period of monitoring during excavation and construction stages.

5.0 QUALITY CONTROL PROCEDURE

On site quality control shall be carried out in accordance with the inspection
and test plan.

6.0 HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT

6.1 Work will be carried out according to the Project Safety Plan.

6.2 Tool box meeting will be carried out on construction area at regular
interval to ensure compliance with the Safety Plan and familiarity with
accident and emergency procedures.

6.3 Machinery involved in the construction will not be allowed to obstruct

the main roads.

6.4 All the works shall comply with DRB-HICOM Environmental

Management Plan.

6.5 Only machinery with proper certificate of fitness will be allowed to

work.

6.6 Safety officer will carry out frequent surveillance checks to ensure that
safety, health and environment is maintained.

6.7 Safety officer will check that all workers use the required PPE during
works.

6.8 Provide signboards to warn workers and public of dangers associated

with construction works.

7.0 TRACK POSSESSION & MONITORING
