Digital Manufacturing

Unit 4: Discrete Execution

Discrete execution
Overview

▪ In this unit we will be covering the discrete

manufacturing functionality of DMCe. We will be
consuming the sheet metal material created during
the process execution unit, cutting it, and engraving
it to make trophy plaques.
▪ First, we will review some basic DMCe functionality
that will be introduced in this unit and then give a
demonstration.

Shop Floor Control Number (SFC)

▪ In discrete manufacturing, each individual product is
assigned a unique SFC number, which is used to
identify the unit throughout the production process.
▪ Genealogy and product history information are
stored against each SFC number.
▪ Because the SFC has to be unique within DMC, it
may or may not be the same as the serial number of
the product.

Work Instructions
▪ Work instructions can be created to
provide operators with visual or textual
information at specific points in the
manufacturing process.
▪ Attachment to specific business
objects, such as a material or
operation activity for which the work
instruction is relevant, is supported.
▪ The system ensures that relevant work
instructions are available for production
operators during execution.
▪ The following types of work instructions
are supported:
– Plain text or links via a URL
– Uploaded files
– 3D models

Data Collection in DMCe

▪ Data collection groups are created to capture specific
details at a specified point in the manufacturing process.
▪ They can be used to capture quality data about the
product or information about the process.
▪ The data can be collected manually or through
equipment integration.
▪ The data can be used to identify and resolve quality
control problems related to specific materials.

Non-Conformance Codes (NC Codes)

▪ NC codes are created to record deviations in
production at the time of manufacturing execution.
▪ The logging of an NC code will disposition the SFC
appropriately based on the disposition routing for the
NC code.
▪ Supported disposition functionality includes:
– Dispositioning the SFC to a nonconformance
routing and returning it to the original production
routing
– Scrap
– Local rework
