The Philippine eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi), also known as the monkey-eating

ne
eagle or great Philippine eagle, is a critically endangered species of an eagle of the
family Accipitridae which is endemic to forests in the Philippines. It has brown and
white-colored plumage, a shaggy crest, and generally measures 86 to 102 cm (2.82 to

3.35 ft) in length and weighs 4.04 to 8.0 kg (8.9 to 17.6 lb). It was formerly known as the
Monkey-eating Eagle, as reports from natives told that the raptor preyed exclusively on
monkeys. This was later found to be incorrect as more recent studies have revealed the
species to prey on a variety of animals ranging from rodents and bats to pigs and
monitor lizards.
The Philippine Eagle was named the national bird of the Philippines in 1995. It is one
of the rarest birds in the world, with an estimated population of fewer than 500
individuals. Also, it was the official mascot for the Southeast Asian Games competition in
2005. In addition, it was named the country’s national bird in 1995. Proclamation No.
615, signed by former President Fidel Ramos, gave way to the recognition of the species
as the country's national bird. Then, it was recognized as such for it is only found in the
Philippines and according to the proclamation, its distinguished characteristics of
strength and love for freedom exemplify the Filipino people
Moreover, the eagle with its keen eyes symbolized courage, strength, and immortality,
but is also considered “king of the skies” and messenger of the highest Gods. In ancient
Rome, the eagle, or Aquila, was the standard of a Roman legion. Each legion carried one
eagle. They represent expansion, strength, a higher perspective, loyalty, victory, power,
foresight, vision, and manifestation. And their dominant element of air draws your
attention to mental pursuits, inspiration, dreams, and spiritual aspirations.
On the other hand, the Philippine Eagle is symbolic of the Filipino's bravery, uniqueness,
strength, power, and love for freedom. It is a national symbol of the rich Filipino
heritage that epitomizes the Filipinos' tenacity and resilience in overcoming the odds to
achieve its goals, soaring high as our eagles amidst all adversities. Losing them to
extinction would mean losing a nation's precious biological heritage.
Meanwhile, the EAGLE WINGS PROGRAM is the development blueprint of the City
Government of Tagum and is the centerpiece of the governance agenda of the
administration of Mayor Allan L. Rellon and Vice Mayor Geterito T. Gementiza. This ten-
point agenda puts the welfare of the people first, following the LGU's principle of
running a government of, for, and by the people of Tagum.
