SECTION B: READING COMPREHENSION (20 Marks) Read the passage below carefully and answer the questions that follow:
A CLASSROOM
A classroom should have doors and windows so as to let in fresh air. Your houses should also have doors and windows
to bring in light and fresh air. We are breathing all the time and for this reason, we need much fresh air. Oxygen makes up one-fifth of
the atmosphere. Without oxygen, plants, animals, and man cannot live. Pilots who fly very high up in the sky or men who go to the
moon need to take along some oxygen with them.
Not only living things need oxygen. Fire cannot burn without oxygen. Oxygen has no taste, no colour and no smell. Another thing we
need so much is water. It has no taste, no colour and no smell. If it has any of these things, therefore, it is not good for drinking. Our
bodies need a lot of water for us to stay alive.
Water is useful to us in other ways. About three quarters of the earth’s surface is water. Ships and boats sail on the
oceans and seas. The sun causes some of the water to evaporate, change into clouds and eventually fall back as rain which helps our
crops to grow. Water is also used to turn generators which produce electricity.
