Lesson: COMPUTING THE VARIANCE OF A DISCRETE PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTION

Lesson Objectives:
1.) Illustrate and calculate the variance of a discrete random variable;
2.) Interpret the variance of a discrete random variable; and
3.) Solve problems involving variance of probability distributions

Formula for the Variance and Standard Deviation of the Probability Distribution

The variance of a discrete probability distribution is given by the formula :

σ =∑ ( X−μ) ∙ P(X )
2 2

σ =∑ X ∙ P ( X ) −μ
2 2 2
Alternative formula:

The standard deviation of a discrete probability distribution is given by the formula :

σ = ∑ ( X−μ) ∙ P(X )
2

Alternative formula: σ =√∑ X 2 ∙ P ( X ) −μ 2

where:
X = value of the random variable X
P(X) = probability of the random variable X
μ = mean of the probability distribution

the variance of a probability

distribution is given by
σ =∑ X ∙ P ( X ) −μ

The standard deviation is σ =√ 0.75=0.87

The standard deviation is the
square root of the variance. Thus,
σ= √∑ X 2
∙ P ( X ) −μ 2

The variance is 0.75 and the standard deviation is 0.87.
