Empirical Article 1

(Xu & O’Brien, 2014)

The finding in the study of fathers and teenage daughters’ relationships by Xu and O’Brien
(2014) in Shanghai, China, between the years of 2008 and 2009 showed results unparallel to
traditional relationships. The study subjects were from different household situations (varied
number of siblings for daughters and wide variety of educational and occupational backgrounds
for fathers) consist of 773 daughters between the ages of 13 and 17 years old, 598 fathers
between the ages of 32 to 40 years old. Although 91% of the daughters answered they favored
their mothers, overall, 75.5% answered they were close to their fathers and 80.3% answered they
were happy with their fathers. This study helps track the changes overtime for traditional and
modern gender norms and fatherhood/manhood in Shanghai, China. (Xu & O’Brien, 2014, pg.

Empirical Article 2
(Ellis et al., 2003)
In the New Zealand part of the study from Ellis et al., 2003, the correlations between early father
absence in the daughters’ lives showed significantly high rates in early sexual activities and
teenage pregnancy. This study compared three situations, early father absence (between ages 5 to
15), late father absence (after age 15), and father present daughters. Approximately 60% of early
father absent girls were sexually active in young ages, as well as 26% resulting with teenage
pregnancy. Due to the nature of longitudinal studies observing data overtime, these finding are
helpful to compare with the changing norms in different father-daughter relationship models.

Empirical Article 3

(Sagkal et al., 2018)

The study of Sagkal et al., 2018 revealed the significance in correlations between father-daughter
relationships and three aspects, basic psychological need satisfaction, well-being, and ill-being of
the daughters. Compared to a decade ago, Turkish father tend to spend more time childrearing
and still tend to be the breadwinner in the family. But the tradition of preferring son over
daughter has shifted to not caring as much for the sex of the child. The total of 310 Turkish girls
between the ages of 14 and 18 and father between the ages of 36 to 66 participated. The rating
scale to measure degree of closeness indicated, the closer fathers and daughters are, the higher in
psychological need satisfaction and well-being of the daughters. Consequently, the lower in scale
rating indicated higher ill-being and less satisfaction for daughters. This study could develop
methods to bettering mental health and recommend a greater pool of participants from different
parts of the world for future research.

Empirical Article 4
(Campbell & Winn., 2018)

In Campbell and Winn’s (2018) article, the findings include what helps develop and maintain
bonds for biological father-daughter and stepfather-daughter relationships. Study subjects
were 7th to 12th graders who lived with either biological fathers or stepfathers. The total of
1881 biological father participants and 273 stepfather participants did not show significant
difference in closeness regarding interpersonal dynamics. However, closeness in relationship
was rather dependent on shared activities and effective communications. This study can be
the first step to studying effective and efficient ways to connect biological and stepfamilies.

Empirical Article 5

(Wright et al., 2013)

The correlation between watching TV shows, 16 and pregnant as well as Teen Mom on MTV,
with teenage pregnancies and adolescence motherhood was a controversy debating whether those
shows promoted and encouraged teenage sexual behaviors or now. The study from Wright et al.,
(2013) found that while mother and daughter communications about sex and teenage motherhood
was not affected by frequent viewing of the show, there were some significant differences in sex
talk with the fathers. Of 313 daughters who participated, girls who did not have frequent sex
talks with their fathers but watched more episodes of answered they were sexually active more.
On another note, girls who had frequent sex talks with their fathers watched less episodes and
participated less in sexual activities. This study serves to see how father-daughter relationship
affects sexual behaviors in daughters, as communication on sex between the two parties and
sexual behavior results is mainly focused on.
