Important information about your Jobseeker’s Allowance

1. Self-Employed Customers
From 1 January 2007, self-employed customers may have to pay a Class S PRSI contribution on income
from self-employment. If you are self-employed, and not already registered, please contact your tax office.
If you have been advised by Revenue, that you do not have to pay PRSI, you may become a voluntary
contributor if you meet certain conditions. Voluntary contributions allow you to remain insured if you leave
the PRSI system and these contributions may help you get a pension in the future.

2. Reduced rates of Jobseeker’s Allowance

Reduced rates of Jobseeker’s Allowance apply to certain customers under age 25. Further information
about these reduced rates is available on the Department’s website www.welfare.ie on the following page:
www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Jobseekers-Allowance.aspx

3. Increase for Qualified Adult

If your spouse/civil partner/cohabitant is dependent on you (not in receipt of an ETB, VTOS or certain
Social Welfare payments in his/her own right) you may qualify for an increase in your payment (Increase for
a Qualified Adult – IQA).

4. Increase for Qualified Child

An increase for a qualified child is payable in respect of each qualified child who normally resides with you.
Half this amount is payable if your spouse/civil partner/cohabitant is in receipt of an ETB payment, certain
Social Welfare payments or educational/training allowances.

5. Means Test
Jobseeker’s Allowance is a means-tested payment. The rate of your payment depends on you and your
spouse/civil partner/cohabitant’s income, earnings and savings. Your weekly rate may vary depending on
the number of days worked. The following are the main items that count as means:
 cash income which you or your spouse/civil partner/cohabitant have, including income from
occupational pensions or benefits and pensions from another country
 savings in Banks, Building Societies, Post Office, Credit Unions and similar financial institutions,
cash in hand
 investments, shares, property or land (but not your home)
 maintenance paid to you if you are separated
 credit/debit cards (including pre-paid cards)
If means are assessed against you, you will receive a separate form explaining how they have been
calculated.

6. Leaving the State

You must tell us immediately if you or any of your dependants intend to leave the State.

7. Holidays
You may take up to 2 weeks paid holidays in a calendar year. You must tell us before you go.

8. Payment at the Post Office

You must collect your payment on the due date. If you do not, it will be returned to the Department and
there may be a delay in re-issuing it to you. You will need your Public Services Card to collect your
payment.

9. Waiting Days
The first three days of a claim are not paid. These are known as waiting days. However, if your claim is
linked to an earlier claim you will be paid from the first day of the claim.

10. Holiday Pay

Jobseeker’s Allowance is not paid for any day you receive holiday pay from your employer. If you are a
substitute teacher/special needs assistant, please contact your Intreo Centre/Branch Office about the
special arrangements that apply to you.

11. Supplementary Welfare Allowance

If you were in receipt of Supplementary Welfare Allowance while awaiting a decision on your claim, the
amount of Supplementary Welfare Allowance paid will be deducted from any arrears due to you.

12. Overpayments
If you were overpaid on a Social Welfare scheme in the past, we may make deductions from your weekly
payment to recover the overpayment. Your Intreo Centre/Branch Office will contact you in this regard.

13. Taxation
Your Jobseekers Allowance payment, including increases for dependent adults or children and other
Allowances paid with your payment, is fully exempt from income tax, PRSI and USC.

14. Efforts to find work

You should keep any documentary evidence you have in relation to efforts to seek work. You will be asked
to provide evidence that you are genuinely seeking work.

15. Sunday Working

Sunday is treated like any other day in the week, as a day of employment or unemployment as appropriate.
