Brief history

• An Indian philosopher, Maharshi Kanad postulated that matter (padharth) can be divided into smaller and smaller particles.

• The smallest particles which is unbreakable was called as Parmanu.

• Pakudha Katyayama, elaborated this doctrine and said that these particles normally exist in a combined form which
gives us various forms of matter.

• Greek philosopher, Democritus postulated the indivisible particles as atoms.

• Till eighteenth century, only hypothesis were proposed but later experiments were conducted.
