2.3 Dangerous Goods Incident

2.3.1 Dangerous Goods Incidents Checklist

All aircraft types

Cabin Crew Checklist

(Dangerous Goods incidents in the cabin – if door closed)

First step

 Notify the pilot-in-command / other cabin crew members

 Identify the item and location

In case of fire and smoke

 Fight fire and smoke following Fire fighting drill

Spillage or leakage of dangerous goods

 Move passengers away from area and distribute wet towels

 Don rubber gloves and smoke hood to protect skin
 Place dangerous goods item in polyethylene bags (Lavatory)
 Treat affected seat cushions / covers in the same manner as dangerous goods item
 Cover spillage on carpet / floor

After landing

 Identifying to ground personnel where the item is located and providing all information
about the item

Give necessary information to the captain, help filling the reports

2.3.2 Expanded Dangerous Goods Incident Checklist

Expanded Dangerous Goods Incident Checklist- For cabin crew

(Dangerous Goods incidents in the cabin – if door closed)

First step
 Inform the captain

Any incident concerning dangerous goods should be notified immediately to the pilot-in-
command who should be kept informed of all actions taken and of their effect. It is essential that
the cabin crew and the flight crew coordinate their actions and that each is kept fully informed
of the other’s actions and intentions.
 Identify the item

Ask the passenger concerned to identify the item and indicate its potential hazards. The
passenger may be able to give some guidance on the hazard(s) involved and how these could be
deal with. If the passenger can identify the item inform the captain classification and name of
the item
Fire and smoke
 Apply the firefighting and smoke removal procedure/ check if it can be used water

Appropriate firefighting procedure must be used. Water should not be used on a spillage since it
may spread the spillage or increase the rate of fuming. Consideration should also be given to the
possible presence of electrical components when using the water.
 Place dangerous goods item in polyethylene bags

In case the item should be removed and putted in a polyethylene bag. This should be done as
suggested below

 Prepare two bags by rolling up the sides and placing them on the floor
 Place the item inside the first bag with the closure of the item, or the point from which it is
leaking from its container, at the top
 Leakage should be removed by using paper towels, newspapers, absorbent fabrics
 Take off the rubber gloves while avoiding skin contact with any contamination on them
 Place the rubber gloves in the second bag
 Put the rubber gloves and items containing dangerous good to the second bag to any
prevent reactions.
 Twist the open end of the first bag and use a bag tie to tie it sufficiently tight to be secure
but not so tight that pressure equalization cannot take place
 Place the first bag (containing the item) in the second bag and secure the open end in the
same manner as that used for the first bag.

 Полиэтилен ууттай зүйлийг хураах Stow polyethylene bags

Take the bags to a position as far away as possible from the flight deck and passengers. To
prevent any other leakages put the bags in the lavatory bin which has automatic heat activate
extinguisher in a vertical position. It can be stowed in a lavatory because it has separate
ventilation from the passenger cabin.

If needed rear galleys can be used

If the galley is used, the bags can be stowed in an empty waste bin container, but do not place
the bags against the bulkhead or fuselage wall.

Amplified procedures for spillage or leakage of dangerous goods

 Collect polyethylene bags or other useful items

Collect polyethylene bag or collect for use in dealing with the spillage or leakage

 a supply of paper towels or newspapers or other absorbent pap or absorbent fabric

 fire-resistant gloves
 waste polyethylene bag, such as those used for duty-free bags, if none available, use
airsickness bags

 DON RUBBER GLOVES AND SMOKE HOOD

The hands should always be protected before touching suspicious packages or items. Fire-
resistant gloves or oven gloves covered by polyethylene bags are likely to give suitable
protection. Smoke hood should always be worn when attending to an incident involving smoke,
fumes or fire.

Instruct the passengers to use wet towel or cloth held over the mouth and nose. Wet towel or
cloths aids in filtering and is more effective at doing this than a dry towel or cloth.

Cabin crew should take prompt action if smoke or fumes develop and move passengers away
from the area involved. Must inform the captain in case group passengers seats needed to be
change. Provide wet towel or cloths and give instructions to protect breathing.

 TREAT AFFECTED SEAT CUSHIONS / COVERS IN THE SAME MANNER AS

DANGEROUS GOODS

Seat cushions, seat backs or other furnishings which have been contaminated by a spillage
should be removed from their fixtures and placed in a polyethylene bags. They should be
stowed away in the same manner as dangerous goods item causing the incident.

Cover any spillage on the carpet or furnishings with waste bags or other polyethylene bags, if

BOOK

available. If not use airsickness bags opened out so that the plastic side covers the spillage or
use plastic covered emergency information cards.

Carper which has been contaminated by spillage and which is still causing fumes despite being
covered, should be rolled up, if possible, and placed in a large bag. It should be placed in a
waste bin and stowed, when possible, either in the rear toilet or rear galley. If the carpet cannot
be removed it should remain covered by a large bin bag or polyethylene bags and additional
bags should be used to reduce the fumes.
 REGULARLY INSPECT THE ITEMS STOWED AWAY / CONTAMINATED
FURNISHINGS

Any dangerous goods, contaminated furnishings or equipment which have been removed and
stowed away or covered for safety should be subject to regular inspection.
AFTER LANDING
 Upon arrival. Apply the operator’s post-incident procedures. These may include identifying to
ground personnel where the item is stowed and providing all information about the item.
 Complete the required documentation.

Required information should be written in the CLB , as per operator procedures, so that the
operator is notified of the event , proper maintenance action is undertaken and the emergency
response kit or any aircraft equipment used is replenished or replaced, if applicable.

Give necessary information to the captain, help filling the reports
