Purpose: To know how to do the follow-up part and the general discussion part of
IOA.
Learning To present the three parts of an Individual Oral Assessment.

Activity 02: Let´s read the following information to confirm, contrast or refute your responses in
the previous exercise
IB PRESCRIBED THEMES
These are the five prescribed themes from English IB syllabus that you are studying in a higher level.
The aim is that you can discuss about relevant issues concerned personal, local or national, and
global interest. You can compare your culture to other cultures finding similarities or differences in
order to broaden your international mindedness. The IB Prescribed themes have the following topics
for each theme that you have been studying until now.

CONNECTION WITH THE LITERARY NOVEL

These themes are also used to make connections with the literary work. That´s to say how the novels
link to the themes from English B syllabus. It´s important that you can interpret and evaluate your ideas,
make connections and comparisons with your own cultural experiences. Finally, try to have an authentic
conversation to the best of your ability.

Activity 3: Now let´s recap the different parts of an IOA.

● FOLLOW UP DISCUSSION
In the second part of the interview, you will interact with the teacher for about 4 to 5 minutes, so
the teacher will ask questions according to the student´s presentation. This conversation is
about the extract and the understanding of the whole novel.

● GENERAL DISCUSSION
In this final part of the interview, the discussion goes around one or two of the IB prescribed
themes. It means that the extract is related to these IB themes: Identities, Experiences, Human
ingenuity, Social organization, Sharing the planet.
LET´S PRACTICE
Activity 03: Now, let´s read two extracts from the book “The Giver” by Lois Lowry. You have to
choose 1 extract.
A. It’s time to choose one extract from “The Giver” (extract A or extract B)
Now that you have chosen 1 extract, you have 20 minutes to plan your oral presentation focusing
mainly:
● On the characters /events/ themes and messages within the allocated extract.
● During this time, you are allowed to use a blank sheet of paper on which to make up to 10
notes in bullet-point form.

B. Record a presentation of 3 – 4 minutes about the extract of The Giver. During


the presentation, you should:
• Summarize the extract. (1 min approx.)
• Briefly relate the extract to the literary novel as a whole. (1 min approx.)
• Express your opinions on the characters, events, ideas and themes presented in the extract. (1’)
• Relate the extract with one of the prescribed themes. (1 min approx.)

ACTIVITY 6: It´s time to practice the discussion part.


Let´s imagine that this your IOA and you are in the second part of the IOA,
so you will work in pairs using questions from activity 6 to do the interaction.
Follow the instructions:
⮚ Work in pairs and switch roles with your partners, at first one is the
evaluator and the other is the candidate them change the roles.
⮚ Make use of the questions given in activity 6. Feel free to add another question.

⮚ Present your audio from 4 to 5 minutes (each student)

During the conversation, you will continue in YOUR ROLES OF


EVALUATOR AND CANDIDATE.

according to the fragment chosen by your partner.

● In terms of Human Ingenuity, we can see all innovations that humans are
capable to do. Do you think science can change the world in the next 100
years?
● Do you think technological advances are always good? Or can they sometimes be bad and harmful?
● Science and technology have an impact on the environment. What environmental problems do people
face?

FRAGMENT B
● Concerning matters of humanity and society. What do you think is the individual's role in a community?
● It´s said that people must be blindly obedient to the rules of society. To what extent is it relevant to
question everything about issues that affect your community?
● How do you think people express their individuality and freedom?
