Understanding Body Types and Characteristics

William Sheldon developed a theory of body typing based on measurements of muscle, bone, and fat distribution. The three main body types are ectomorph, mesomorph, and endomorph. Ectomorphs tend to be thin, delicate, and lightly muscled with a preference for mental activities. Mesomorphs tend to have a hard, muscular body and enjoy physical activities and power. Endomorphs tend to have a soft body and round shape with a love of food and comfort. While body types may influence certain physical abilities, profiling people solely based on physical attributes is unreliable and can be unpleasant.

BODY TYPES

PATHFIT 1
TARGETS:
▪ Define BMI,
▪ Identify the different body types and it’s characteristics,
▪ Understand the implications of the different body types.
INTRODUCTION
Tendency to label people based on their looks.
BODY TYPING
(Somatotypes)
William Sheldon’s Theory
“Atlas of Men’ (1970)

 Measurement of
Muscle – size, strength, endurance
Bone – length and Girth
Fat – percentage, distribution.
BODY TYPE
ENDOMORPHIC – centered on the abdomen, and the
whole digestive system.

MESOMORPHIC – focused on the muscles and the

circulatory system.

ECTOMORPHIC – related to the brain and nervous

system.
SHELDON SOMATOTYPING
Each area measured on a 1 – 7 scale
Type is decided by predominant (highest to
lowest numbers)

Endo -4
Ecto -7
Meso -1
