Speed and Velocity Worksheet 2.4.23

This document contains 5 speed and velocity problems involving calculating average speed for a cheetah sprinting, a runner on a track, the speed of light and distance of a light year. It shows the work and calculations for each problem, including dividing distances by times to find average speeds in meters/second or kilometers/hour, and using the speed of light and travel time to calculate the distance from Earth to the Sun.

Section 2.4 - Calculating Speed and Velocity

Speed and Velocity Problems- Show all work!

1. What is the average speed of a cheetah that sprints 100 m in 4 s? How about if it sprints 50 m in 2 s?

25 m/s

2. A runner makes one lap around a 200 m track in a time of 25.0 s. What was the runner's average
speed?

8 m/s

3. Light and radio waves travel through a vacuum in a straight line at a speed of very nearly 3.00  108
m/s. How far is light year (the distance light travels in a year)?

I calculated the number of seconds in one year. (365) days is one year. (24 hours is one day) (3600 seconds is one
hour)

4. A motorist travels 406 km during a 7.0 hr period. What was the average speed in km/hr?

406 km divided by 7.0 hr. 58.0 Km/hr

I did 406 divided by 7.0 and got 58.0 km/hr

5. Light from the sun reaches the earth in 8.3 minutes. The speed of light is 3.0  108 m/s. In
kilometers, how far is the earth from the sun?

So the light from the sun would have travelled -----
