On the people of the Caribbean
Caribbean nations’ development and efforts to combat poverty depend heavily on trade. They depend on exports in order to manufacture manufactured goods at an efficient scale given their tiny market size. They also depend heavily on tourism as a driver of economic activity, given their natural resources. As a result, through promoting growth, trade in the Caribbean is a crucial factor in boosting employment and lowering poverty. Caribbean economies are also particularly susceptible to outside shocks due to their significant reliance on trade. For instance, the global financial crisis resulted in huge job losses in industries like tourism, which provide employment for the underprivileged. Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME) The Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME) is an initiative of the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) that would integrate member-states into a single economic unit. The end result would be the free movement of capital, services, technology and skilled professionals within the region. This development strategy was envisioned at the 10 th Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Commun ity which took place in July 1989 in Grand Anse, Grenada.
