INTRODUCTION Beta
● HCG
A hormone found in the blood and urine during pregnancy.
It may also be found in higher than normal amounts in
patients with some types of cancer, including testicular,
ovarian, liver, stomach, and lung cancers, and in other
disorders. Measuring the amount of beta-human chorionic
gonadotropin in the blood or urine of cancer patients may
help to diagnose cancer and find out how well cancer
treatment is working. Beta-human chorionic gonadotropin
is a type of tumor marker. Also called beta-hCG.

2
Why is it called Beta
HCG

This test is often also called a beta-hCG test, with
beta referring to the beta protein found on the
hCG hormone. The hCG hormone is produced
during pregnancy, and the blood test measures
the amount of hormone circulating in the
blood.

3
2 and 3 weeks in pregnant HCG
levels

2 Weeks Pregnant HCG LevelAverage hCG levels:
Less than 10 U/L in non-pregnant women. 10 to
25 U/L for a 'borderline' pregnancy result. more
than 25 U/L for a positive result. At 3 weeks
pregnant, your hCG levels can range from about
5 to 72 mIU/mL.

4
Low levels of Beta hCG are seen in case there is

An error in calculation of pregnancy date

Miscarriage

Pregnancy without an embryo

Pregnancy outside of the uterus other than
normal location

5
High levels of Beta hCG are seen in case there is

An error in calculation of pregnancy date

Abnormal pregnancy

More than one pregnancy

Germ cell tumor

Gestational trophoblastic disease 6
What does result of Beta HG test means?

Beta hCG levels less than 5 mlU/mL, indicates
negative results for pregnancy

Beta hG levels more than 25 mlU/mL, indicates
positive result for pregnancy

Beta hG levels more than 1,00,000 mlU/mL,
indicates the presence of a tumor

7
Why the Test is Performed

HCG appears in the blood and urine of pregnant
women as early as 10 days after conception.
Quantitative HCG measurement helps
determine the exact age of the fetus. It can also
assist in the diagnosis of abnormal pregnancies,
such as ectopic pregnancies, molar pregnancies,
and possible miscarriages. It is also used as part
of a screening test for Down syndrome. This test
is also done to diagnose abnormal conditions not
related to pregnancy that can raise HCG level.

Risk

Risks of having blood drawn are slight,
but may include:Excessive
bleedingFainting or feeling
lightheadedBlood accumulating under
the skin (hematoma)Infection (a slight
risk any time the skin is broken)

How fast do HCG levels rise

In the first four weeks of a viable
pregnancy, hG levels will typically double
about every two to three days. After six
weeks, the levels will double about every
96 hours. So, if your baseline level is
higher than 5 mlU/mL, your doctor may
order a repeat test a couple days later to
see if the number doubles.
12
How much does HCG increase overnight

Normally, the amount of CG should double
every 48-72 hours or increase by 60
percent or more every two days. If your hG
levels don't double, it may indicate a
nonviable pregnancy, whether intrauterine
or extrauterine. A rapid increase of hCG in
the blood can indicate, among other things,
twins or triplets. 13
