Title: Let’s say Yet

Teacher: Ms. von Beren

Grade: lower elementary school
Topic: growth mindset (social emotional learning)
Approximate length: 30 minutes
Instructional goal: we are not all great at things, and there are things that we cannot do yet; by
the end of the lesson, students will create mini posters with mantras to remind themselves we are
always growing. This lesson can be used with any students; however, I find it very helpful for
students who may have dyslexia or are just struggling with reading.
Materials:
- The Magical Yet (www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dg-p0uTtULM here is an online read
aloud if you do not own the book)
- Anchor chart paper
- Markers
- Worksheet (attached below)
Teacher talk (procedure):
- Opening:
- Remind students it is important to learn different subjects in school, but it is
essential to develop social and emotional skills as well
- Have students say growth mindset and define it
- Introduce book
- Talk about feelings, discuss what it feels like not to be able to do things we want
to
- During:
- Read The Magical Yet, stop at certain spots for engagement and conversations
- After reading the book, have students share things they can not do yet, and put
them on an anchor chart (make sure you share an example of your own)
- If students are not comfortable being vulnerable, they can write them on
sticky notes, and you can add them later
- Model things we can tell ourselves when we cannot do things
- Have students go from carpet to desks for independent work
- Closing:
- Bring students back together for a share
- Have students turn in their work; you can then shrink them and tape them to their
desks as a reminder of this lesson
Assessment: there is no real assessment, but the worksheet will see if the students came up with
helpful things to tell themselves
