HIP-HOP DANCE

● Street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music or that have evolved as part
of hip-hop culture.
History
● 1960’s and 1970’s- originally inspired by the movements of African dancing, and
flourished as a new style of dance performed on the street for the people.
● Kool DJ Herc- Ingeniously thought to extend dance sections of songs to create better
opportunities to showcase the breaking movements of dancers/
● 70’s Afrika Bambaataa- the word “hip”
● Street gangs- The reasons for the decline in their activity is also the popularization and
flourishing of hip-hop dance and culture.
● At the end of the 20th century- Hip-hop continued to gain popularity, changed, and
even lost the meaning of protest.
● Beginning of the 21st century- old school is the base of hip-hop, all that danced in the
period of its origin and development and the new school came to hip-hop culture with
the beginning of the commercialization of dance.
Basics
● Popping and locking: basic staple of hip-hop and is very improvisational. Created by
Sam Solomon and consists of quickly contracting and relaxing your muscles. Locking
was created by Don Campbell, it consists of performing a series of locking movements
and holding
● Breaking: also known as breakdancing, b-boying, or b-girling could be the most
common element of hip-hop.
● Very unstructured and improvisational and is performed at all different levels, toprock
(standings), downrock (close to the floor), power moves (acrobatics), and freeze moves
(poses).
● Boogaloo: movement using mostly the hips and legs. Loose movement that gives the
illusion that the dancers have no bones from the waist down.
● Soulja Boy: named after DaAndre Cortez Way because he helped popularize it. Looping
steelpan riff. Biggest dance fad since Macarena.
● The SpongeBob: 1990’s in the clubs of Baltimore.
What to Wear?
● Oversized pants, jerseys, and sneakers, became the costumes in which these dancers
presented their moves to the world.
● Tracksuits and jackets.
● Accessories, heavy earrings, long chains, and belts.
● Women (Pants, shorts and tank tops, tube tops, sneakers with split sole)
BALLROOM DANCES
● Set of partner dances, which are enjoyed both socially and competitively around the
world. Because of its performance and entertainment aspects, ballroom dance is also
widely enjoyed on stage, flim, and television.
● May refer to almost any recreational dance with a partner. However, with the
emergence of dance competition (Dancesport), two principal schools have emerged
and the term is used more narrowly to refer to the dances recognized by those schools.
● The term is derived from the word “ball” which is from the Latin word “ballare” which
means “to dance.” In the past, ballroom dancing was social dancing for the privileged,
leaving folk dancing for the lower classes.
