Empirical Question (16 points).

Recently, there is much more focus on how historical events have affected current level of
economic development. The researcher is interested in answering the following question: can
part of Africa’s current underdevelopment be explained by its slave trade?

The dataset slavetrade.xlsx contains the following variables:

Country: name of the country

GDP: real GDP per capita for Country in year 2000.

Slaves: # of slaves exported from Country from 1400 to 1900, constructed from ship records on
the number of slaves shipped from Country.

Other controls & geographic controls of Country:

area: area of Country.

longitude: Longitude

rain: Minimum monthly rainfall

humidity: Average humidity

temp: Average minimum temperature

Colonizer_French: 1 means Country’s colonizer is France before Country’s


independence. 0 otherwise.

4. a) Write down the model you would use to answer the question can part of Africa’s current
underdevelopment be explained by its slave trade? Report your results using Excel or other
statistical software and interpret the results.

Answer: I am using statical analysis method. If we analyze the data of Africa then we have found
that Africa is on number 34 in slave trade.

trade of all countries and can compare Africa with other countries.
