Instructions for Assignment Submission

Overall, the structure of an assignment should be organized in a clear and concise manner
typically consisting of the following sections that effectively communicates the main ideas and
findings.

1. Define the bioproduct: The first step in simulating a bioprocess is to define the
bioproduct you want to produce. This will determine the type of microorganism you
will need to use, the growth conditions that will be required, and the yield of the
product.
2. Define the bioreactor parameters: Next, you will need to define the parameters of the
bioreactor itself. This includes the size of the reactor, the agitation rate, the
temperature, and the pH.
3. Select the microorganism: Based on the bioproduct you want to produce and the
growth conditions required, you will need to select a suitable microorganism to use in
the bioreactor.
4. Set up the mass balance equations: The mass balance equations describe the flow of
materials in and out of the bioreactor. You will need to set up equations that describe
the flow of nutrients, microorganisms, and products.
5. Solve the equations: Using a numerical solver, you can solve the mass balance
equations to predict the behavior of the bioreactor over time. This will allow you to
predict the concentration of microorganisms and products, as well as the yield and
productivity of the bioprocess.
6. Optimize the process: Once you have a working model of the bioprocess, you can use
it to optimize the process parameters. This may involve adjusting the agitation rate,
temperature, pH, or other parameters to maximize the yield or productivity of the
bioprocess.
7. Data required for simulation: You can refer any experimental paper to get the data for
the simulation. Else, you can generate the random data for the simulation as per the
following example:

Substrate Biomass Product

Time Concentration Concentration Concentration
(hours) (g/L) (g/L) (g/L)
0 50 0 0
10 40 2.5 0.5
20 35 4.7 1.2
30 30 7.9 2.5
40 25 11.3 4.2
50 20 14.8 6.5
60 15 18.5 9.2
Substrate Biomass Product
Time Concentration Concentration Concentration
(hours) (g/L) (g/L) (g/L)
70 10 22.2 12.5
80 5 26.1 16.2
90 0 30.0 20.5
